Richard, you appear to insult both the LSA/SP situation and the UL
situation at the same time.
(how can this be?... that one has loathing for both?)
Comparing the UL situation in 1998 with the SP situation today,
I'd rate 1998 as better.
Incidentally, I was an Ultralight Instructor, and the requirements
were about 65 to 100 hours of experience, training specifically
to -be- an instructor, a flight test with an AFI (about $300),
and IIRC $100/year to an Org, on top of the $40/yr for membership of the Org.
Your claim of "$40 a pop" is significantly incorrect.

RE: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Keeping Current
I got the 100 hours from the days of part 103 UL, before the silliness of LSA/SP
came along.
In those days, an instructor was expected to have 100+ hours in their two seat
UL, along with the principals of instruction course before taking a student aloft.
(lets not get into those that were selling instructor certificates at $40 a pop.)

Richard B,
Here is my take on your question.
Your a brand new pilot, just got your certificate.
My suggestion...
Don't even think about a passenger until you have well over 100 hours in your
LSA. You need air time, with lots of landings in all kinds of conditions.
Conditions that your instructor would have been careful to avoid.
Conditions like when the wind was calm and you were wide awake in the morning,
but when you arrive back to land a couple of hours later, the wind is 20 mph
across the runway.
That is no time to be risking a passenger, while you try to learn how to handle
a cross wind landing.
Similarly, when the thermals are popping. The first many times, will have your
hands full just flying, it will be no time to have a panicked passenger grabbing
controls and/or puking and/or screaming in your ear.

I did speak with the FSDO yesterday and confirmed that all of my PIC landings, including the check ride landings, do indeed count.

You are correct, the landings you accomplished as PIC on the check-ride count as your currency. Congrats on the Sport license, nice to see more pilots coming aboard, welcome!

question and he gave me a 90% certainty on his answer.
I passed my sport pilot check ride the other day and have my temporary
airman certificate. a buddy and I are planning to meet another buddy at an
airport restaurant for breakfast next week. 61.57 of the FAR states that in
order to carry passengers I have to keep current by making 3-landings within
the preceding 90-days. as a student pilot I've got that requirement and
more, both in dual and solo.
my question is....do those landings as a student (both dual and solo/PIC)
count towards currency or must I now do 3-landings as a certified pilot
before I can carry my buddy as a passenger? 61.57 makes no such distinction
and my instructor believes I should be just fine but I thought I would ask
here. during my check ride i made 3-landings and the DPE instructed me to
log the flight as PIC time so with that alone I think I'm covered in terms
of currency for passengers...but I'm not 100% certain. yes, I know I can
just go out to the airport and run the pattern for an hour and I may just do
that but I'm curious as to the answer to my question.

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Check Ride
culmination of a 30-year dream for me. I started lessons in a Cessna 152
back in 1982 but as so often happens life got in the way...and kept getting
in the way. i'm retired now and decided that i'm not getting any younger
and that if I was going to get this thing done now was the time. yesterday,
my dream came true thanks to my instructor at the JA Flight School at aurora
airport (ARR) and the DPE at janesville, wi (JVL). I'm thinking of going
for my private pilot but for now I'm going to take a step back, exit
training mode and enjoy my new privleges.
to those on the list who are still in training don't give up...keep on doing
what you're doing. the time and effort you're putting in WILL be worth it
when your DPE hands you your temporary airman certificate. to those who may
be deciding whether or not to start training I would encourage you to take a
discovery ride at a flight school. there is absolutely nothing like the
feeling of that first takeoff. and to those of you who have passed your
check ride...i am proud to be a member of the fraternity.
blue skies to all.

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Short Video of flight in my Skycatcher
Hello Group
I assembled a few images taken with my digital camera on a recent flight with Windows Movie Maker. Take a look and let me know what you think. This is my first attempt at this sort of presentation. Real videos are coming in the future.

Im just a lurker here, but I put up a few photos
of my Challenger that I have been working on for
a while. Paint the wings next and assemble. Power

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: A starting point - first flight
Hi Alan,
Congrats on the first flight. I'm sure it was exhilarating. Only to be soon eclipsed on your journey by your solo and check ride. Glad to hear more Sky Catcher pilots checking in.
Fly safely and often.

After some ground instruction, and preflight check of the Cessna 162 SkyCatcher, we were taxiing to the runway. A quick jog off the taxiway into the run-up area, then we were heading down the runway - AND WE WERE OFF!!!
