Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Happy New Year

"last week I had a nut fall off the elevator  control linkage."

Gees, that can be a little hazardous to your health! Always make positive sure that all nuts and bolts are cotter pinned on rotating parts. I would think an annual inspection would catch that.

A friend of mine flew 100 miles without a safety ring on his wing clevis pin. I showed him that it wasn't there when looking over his plane one day and he turned white when I pointed it out.

last week I had a nut fall off the elevator  control linkage.   I noticed it  on the take off roll as the plane would not lift off .  after coming back to the hanger we found that 3  castle nuts in the cluster of the push pull tube  had NO cotter kea's  and never di,  d they where tightened up by bottoming out on the bolt???wtf     this plane is 7 years old and I am the 3rd owner  my A&P annulled it 3 times for me and WE never found the problem.    I looked over ALL the   assemblies that use cotter kea's and found No other   problems.

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group AOPA NEWS -- AOPA ANNOUNCES 2014 FLIGHT TRAINING EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNERS

Chesapeake Sport Pilot - One of the top eleven flight schools in the United States!

October 1, 2014

                       Steve.Hedges@aopa.org

AOPA ANNOUNCES 2014 FLIGHT TRAINING EXCELLENCE AWARD WINNERS

Frederick, MD – The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) has awarded its third annual Flight Training Excellence Awards to top flight schools and flight instructors ranked by more than 3,600 flight students who voluntarily reviewed their flight training experience through an AOPA online poll.

AOPA has recognized Paragon Flight of Fort Meyers, FL as the 2014 Best Flight School and Spencer Watson of Manassas, VA as the 2014 Best Flight Instructor. Ten additional flight schools and 10 instructors were named "Outstanding" by AOPA as a result of the poll results.

"All of us at AOPA would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to this year's award winners," said Brittney Miculka, senior manager of pilot community development. "We created these awards to recognize those who instill a lifelong passion for aviation among their students, and who exemplify the best the flight training industry has to offer. It was clear from the customer reviews that these professionals are providing a superior flight instruction experience."

The award winners will be recognized at the AOPA Homecoming Fly-in in Frederick, MD on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014.

AOPA has also named an Honor Roll of 62 flight schools and 75 flight instructors, all of which demonstrated a high standard of accomplishment and received at least three nominations.

In addition, a Student's Choice Award was given to the flight school that receives the highest number of positive nominations. For the third year in a row, Aviation Adventures of Virginia won that award with 198 nominations.

The 2014 President's Choice Award winner is GIFT Academy of Vernon, TX. This award is given by the president of AOPA for significant and innovative contributions to the flight training community. GIFT Academy is aimed at helping female pilots find success in flight training in a supportive setting.

To select the award winners, AOPA invited those who have taken flight training within the last 24 months to take part in the poll. Each individual could nominate one flight school and one flight instructor. The online poll was conducted from June 3 to August 23, and contained safeguards to ensure fairness.

That process yielded an evaluation of 1,447 different flight schools and 1,500 individual flight instructors. The poll consisted of 39 survey questions designed to measure the overall performance of a flight school or flight instructor. AOPA will be sharing individual poll results with schools and instructors later this year.

All the award winners may be viewed on the Flight Training magazine website.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group ins

You are going to pay a lot more for insurance and are likely only going
to be able to get liability only as student pilot on an airplane like
that that you would as a rated pilot. Why don't you come on over to our
place finish your SPL and get your seaplane endorsement with us first?

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group thefts

I got this from a friend. Be careful and guard your aircraft.

*************************************************************

Authorities are investigating the apparently well-planned theft of avionics from all 23 resident aircraft at Jerry Sumners Sr. Aurora Municipal Airport in Aurora, Mo., last Wednesday. According to KY3 News, thieves broke into every hangar at the airport and then removed the GPS, radios and transponders from every aircraft. The loss is in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. One of the aircraft owners, Toby Sumners, told the TV station the theft had the hallmarks of a carefully thought-out crime. "This is definitely a planned out, my opinion, it's definitely a planned out thing because like I said, it's not equipment that you use in your cars, not equipment that you use in your house, so what other purpose would there need to be unless there was a high demand for it on the other side of the market," he said. Three weeks ago the engine was stolen from a Piper Archer parked at the nearby Flying Bar H Airport but it's not known if the cases are related.

Hi Rich,

I assume you are using your HT in the Skycatcher.  It has the loudest cabin noise level of any GA plane. My Bose ANR didn't quiet enough, so I got a Lightspeed set --  works much better. But I am still concerned that my transmissions on the com are dominanted by background noise when I'm climbing at full power.  It sure sounds bad on the sidetone.

At Sporty's you can probably find a headset adapter and PTT for your HT.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Using Amateur Radio In Flight

I took a hand held HAM radio up last year in my coupe with a friend who is a HAM fanatic. My plane isn't real quiet but is enclosed when you close the windows.  I have Lightspeed headsets into a Flightcom intercom.  We reached out 75 miles with the handheld but blew my fuses.  So check to see what your draw is.  If I remember correct, we reduced the output and it did fine.  Let me think about how I connected it but think it is was a simple connection into my existing intercom.

We were going to look into another antennae connection to a VHF antennae and make it the correct length but haven't done that yet.
