Do you fly a Quicksilver? Piper pilots don't become acquainted to their rudders until they do transition training to some other aircraft. The rudder on a Piper does ground steering and was a convenient place to mount the brakes.
For me, I'd give up my rudder and ailerons if I could have a working elevator.
If you do fly a Quick, don't be like the guy in the South that used a hardware store bolt on the elevator tube pivot point just behind the seat. He Quickly found how much he valued his elevator as he splashed down into a creek IIRC.

I think you guys are making it way to complicated there is only one control surfave that "turn" a plane without any other input from other control surfaces, rudder. If I had to give up two of my control surfaces in flight it sure would not be the rudder... You can change your heading with rudder, adjust your altitude with power and level your wings with rudder, what else do you need?
