Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group medical question

See FAR 61.23.  For example, I am a Class I medical holder over age 40 and let's say I got a physical today (10/11/2009).  I am legal to exercise the privileges of my ATP until 04/30/2010.  Then I can exercise the privileges of my Commercial license until 10/31/2010.  Then I can exercise Private Privileges only until 10/31/2011.  At that point, I am flying Sport Pilot only until I get another medical and the class of medical I get determines what privileges I am legal to use on my pilot certificate. 

 

I don't understand your question about acting as a Private Pilot flying Sport.  I think you mean, without a medical can a PP fly as a SP?  If so, the answer is yes. 

 

And no, a Class II medical does not upgrade your Private license in any way.  You are still flying as a PP with a Class II medical in your pocket, but a year later it becomes a Class III good for either 1 or 4 more years depending on age.

 

No, Sport does not say you can legally fly as a Private Pilot without a medical just because you are one.  That's one of the major reasons for Sport, to be able to fly as a SP without a medical.  Your last line says it perfectly.  I should have read ahead better.  :)

Even though you have a Private, class II med, isn't it only truly a private status only with a current medical. Seems to me you would have to qualify for the whole thing to be called one. It doesn't take away you private status ticket, I understand that, but would it disqualify you from acting as a private pilot flying sport?

 

Does sport pilot say if you can't legally fly as private that you can still fly as one under sport without the qualifying medical? Leave it to me to come up with this one.

 

I guess you are a private pilot without a medical exercising the privileges of Sport.
