Bill,
I first learned computers on paper tape and punch cards.
My first computer job, in the us army, was paper tape and teletypes.
(at 110 baud). tons of time on card sorters, accounting machines, almost all were programed via jumper cables, the IBM model 26 card punch, teletype terminals with paper tape (we actually used milar tape, which tended to 'eat' the punches).
My first job out of college was converting a system from transportation system from paper tape and punch cards to IBM 16x64 terminals under the Westi network software.
Those were some interesting days.
The instant access to detailed interface information and communication protocols that we have today would have been godsends back then.
