When I'm on the road I use a small computer and no mouse so reading top replies is easier for me.  If I am making a complex response involving multiple breaks then I find inline responding to be better.  So, I don't think there's one "right way."  I think it depends on the individual situation.  I think that generally speaking, trimming could be used a bit more by people.  --Jim

That's because the people doing it were doing it wrong. You didn't ahve to
do anything to read *this* reply.

Accepted etiquette on the Internet has been to quote and reply as I do for
at least the last 30 years. Yes, it's been around that long, and then some.
