Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: tailwheel operations

I find that generally it takes about 80 takeoffs and landings for a pilot to become proficient in fair weather flying, tailwheel operations.  In my opinion, that dual flight time and associated ground instruction is equivilant to an 8th grade education in conventional gear aircraft operations.  The first time you find yourself in taking off or landing with a forty five degree crosswind component  in a wind gusting to fifteen or twenty, you will probably feel very inadequate at the controls, and believe me, there is a lot more going on in tailwheel operations that most can envision. Items such as weather vaning, engine torque, spiriling slip stream and gryrscopic propeller action are forces that need to be understood, experienced and continually thought about.    Although you may feel comfortable in one tailwheel aircraft you may feel very uncomfortable another, so it is prudent to get instruction in the type of aircraft you will actually be flying.   Jim in Oshkosh

Well…It might not take 10 hours.  You might be a natural.  With my superior piloting skills (grin), I’d probably take 50…lol.  I’d certainly not be discouraged by the number of hours, they’d still be fun and you’d get a new skill….one that not all pilots can brag about.  If you can get dual instruction for that reasonable price, GO FOR IT!  It’s something you want to do and sounds like a great place to do it.

Yes, that includes instructor. The prices around me (upstate NY) are quite reasonable compared to other parts of the country. I paid first $60/hr one year then $80/hr the next for my Sport Pilot training.

There is a farmer near me with a J3 who is also a CFI and owns his own strip, that's why the good price.

I had no idea the tail wheel was so involved to take 10 hours. I will re-think my quest.

I just wanted to rent the J3 or a Champ because I have a love for these aircraft, but I don't know if it is worth the time and expense.

This past weekend I started working on tw training.  I flew in a C140... it was not too bad to land and take-off, I was expecting worse. I am not sure how long before getting signed off.  I trust my instructor will not give me the endorsement before I am ready.  After getting the endorsement I can  FINALLY start phase 1 flight testing in my Sonex!
