That Advisory Circular answers all my questions. Thanks.
So, it looks like if you have bought a "Ultralight (fat or not)" that was built by a dealer you'll never be able to register as Exp/AB because it WAS built by professionals for profit.
BUT.... if you were to buy a machine that was assembled by non-professionals you CAN register Exp/AB *IF* you can show some history of the machine, who built it, and why it was built.
I would imagine that you could even write an affidavit stating that "BillyBob" started building the plane in 19** for his own education, "Paul" bought it from "BillyBob" in 20**, and I bought it from "Paul" last month, finished the assembly, and can now register as Exp/AB.
I see that there's a section in there that prohibits using the Experimental category to register a plane built from major components taken from type-certificated airplanes, but I didn't see anything about using donor parts from other Experimentals... maybe I missed it?
Anyways... Good information there Mike, Thanks for posting it.
