There are other forms of profiling as well involving certain behaviors.  I agree with your comments about the racial profiles, but that can be tied in with an overall profile and not used alone.  Inspecting Abid's fingernail clippers just because he meets the profile below is a waste of time.  Inspecting mine just to be politically correct is a waste of time as well.  However, when more factors are considered, profiling can be a very valuable tool that I believe is currently underused.

Even partial solutions to the problem are difficult, complex and
expensive but it seems to me our politicians have us avoiding the
obvious.

Racial profiling works. 99% of terrorists are Muslim males between
the ages of 18 and 40. Go through their bags with a fine tooth comb
and give them the benefit of being strip searched and cavity
searched, etc. Whatever works. This is not time for attempts at being
politically correct.
