Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re:Legend cub instruction/checkout in Pac NW

Not a Legend Cub but a CubCrafters Sport Cub check out www.couleeairservices.com located KTIW (Tacoma). Do you need a Tailwheel endorsement and a flight review?

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Legend cub instruction/checkout in Pac NW

Does anybody know of someone with a Legend Cub (not J-3 or PA-11) available for instruction/BFR/checkout in Oregon or the Pacific Northwest? Thanks,

Bob

RE: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Flying into KTIX

Dunno…..we do burgers at lunch sometimes too…..looking forward to flying her with ya.  I fell in love with the Sting before it became a sport plane.  A guy back in Crete Nebraska had one.  They even made a retract version.  FAST!!

The Sting will never be on the flight line. :D I'm finishing up my check-rides with it and then I'll be writing a check for a 1/4 share of it.

Once I get checked out in it (probably another two flights at most) I'll definitely be flying it a bunch. It's one seriously bad-ass plane if you ask me. I'll be more than happy to give a ride to ya.

When's the next pancake bfast up there at FNL? :D

I worked on the shuttle for a while during the last century.
Never got a chance to see a launch, but I did get to see several landings
from the roof of the hangar at Edwards South Base. That little speck in the
sky gets Big real Fast as it comes in.

And just a few days ago I watched the "new shuttle" on TV as it was launched
atop an Atlas 5. Smaller, Cheaper, Faster :-)

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Weekend

Regarding this last weekend.

It is a good thing that life continues when the WIFI goes down.  It went down at my place on Friday at 8pm.
Just got it back up and running late this Monday morning.

Any way,  I spent most of the weekend at my hanger at the airport doing a final cam timing and button-up of my Verner engine, including setting the prop pitch, balancing the carbs, etc.

Between the rain squalls, there were lots of hanggliders being towed aloft by our local Moyes tug pilot.  Locally known as the Wanatabe Ranch.

As I sit here typing this missive, the rain is coming down in buckets and the wind is whipping by, shaking my RV.
(My brother and I had just washed our vehicles, so we knew it would rain.)

Tomorrow, we are driving to NorthWing to pickup my (repaired) Mustang II trike wing.

I know your going to ask, so to keep a long story short...

At the end of last month, I was outside, with the trike tied down, engine idling, checking for oil leaks. (we were putting in new gaskets to eliminate existing oil leaks).

The wind was blowing around 5mph.
Suddenly the wind jumped to around 20 gusting 30.
The back of the wing was to the wind (oops).
The wing tossed around until the trailing edge and the prop shook hands in a most friendly fashion.
Just to make matters more interesting, as we prepared the wing for its' trip to NorthWing, we managed to break a sprog :-(
As a side note, the wing is ~5 years old.  So it was time to be replacing the lower cables.

All the above is now fixed, including a scallop in each trailing edge so there will be no more friendly meetings between the prop and the wing.

Ah - thanks John, that's extremely valuable information. Looks like they've got a pretty big TFR window to contend with. I guess I'll just have to fly low and slow (car) over to the desired viewing point of choice.

At least I'll get to the state by flying, assuming the weather is good and all.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Weekend

Glad to hear the wx held on the Eastern Shore. I took a friend's son
out for a first flight to CGS here on the Western Shore Saturday and was
dodging rain drops the whole time. Sunday the visibility was so bad,
driving wasn't even very safe and that was before the storms came
crashing through. Glad Massey turned out well.

This was from a previous launch but is probably the norm. KTIX was included in the TFR.. It's basically 30nm no fly zone with a restricted (ATC contact with special assigned transponder code) zone from 30 to 40 nm...

What ya mean only for the ducks? Saturday was awesome, Massey Areodrome had a Fly In on Saturday called their Chilly Fest. I got out from Pemberton NJ by 10 am with a couple of buds out to Massey and everyone had a great time. Sure where a lot of different aircraft at Massey. Easy there where a 100 planes.. J3s, Titans, Rans, WArbirds, RVs, Cessna, Vintage, Trikes, even ultralight! They had 3 Steerman tied down side by side and I think one they called a Vultee? Not sure may have that wrong. One of the Steerman's gave a show with smoke over the pattern.

The flight out in the morning was smooth air all the way. Got a little bumpy in the afternoon for the flight back but no big deal.
By 5pm the weather did a complete turnaround from blue skies to overcast and windy. Found a few thermals on the flight back that gave me a free ride up to 3K before I bailed out. They were a lot of fun. You missed a great day on Saturday.

Blue skies,

;-)  Take a guess Brian....   I'm sure you'll have it right.

My family and I saw a launch in January 1997.
Of course we had to watch it from about 5 miles away,
parked alongside the road at about 2AM like all the other plebs,
not from the grandstand where the Pres watches from.
;-)
But still, nice to see it.

Cheers,
Mike

That it is. I'm sure the whole area is going to be stupid-crazy with people like me making a last-ditch effort to see it go up. I've never been to a launch, so with any luck it will all work out.

Does anyone know if they normally do a TFR in the area when the launch window opens, or is the airspace around KTIX open even during the launches? I can't imagine it would be.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Flying into KTIX

Bill,

Thanks for the advice/tips on this. Hurricanes are definitely something I had/have in mind to be mindful of. Obviously I'm going to have to wait and see how the fall develops. I'm fairly certain that if it looks like it's an active season I might call the whole flight off and just go commercial. We've got a week to make our way down there (leaving the Friday before the launch), so I'm hoping the cells in the Atlantic are somewhat predictable (as predictable as hurricanes can be that is).

Good idea re: calling and chatting w/ the insurance company to make sure things are cool with going down there. I've got a lot of personal work to cover flying-wise to make sure I'm adequately prepared for the trip. My wife and I are going to be doing several overnights out and back from EIK to the east as sort of trial runs. We'll see how that goes. :)

Some insurance policies even pay you for the costs involved if you have to move your plane to avoid an approaching storm. At any rate, since you have the time you might want to talk to your insurance company about the trip. Sounds like a real adventure. Be ready to watch an awful lot of very flat land for a change. Your wife may want to bring a book. I encourage anybody travelling cross-country in a light plane to become familiar with the following web link that graphically depicts the expected turbulence outlook: http://www.wunderground.com/Aviation_Maps/Turbulence/FL50-12.html#a_topad Had I done the proper pre-flight planning (and been aware of this web site) I could have avoided an unpleasant ride, a lot of rental car expense and a sick wife during a trip from Mississippi to South Carolina earlier this year. Safe travels.

I have a Comtronics headset like the picture and another cheaper one plus a Comtronic intercom.  They work very well. I bought them about 1988 as they had good quality, reasonable in price, and were a small outfit  that believed in service.  They also had a helmet and the ultralight people thought they were the Best Non-canceling head set going.

As to price, I don't know so you might call 570.402.3330

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Best, Safest LSA Aircraft for Mountain and Cross Country Flying

Hello,

Our club, Skyraider Aviation, near Denver operates 3 different Light Sport Aircraft. Our Gobosh 700 has been to the aforementioned Leadville, Lake County Airport a few times, as well as to Steamboat Springs, CO (also a high elevation mountain airport) on several occasions. I've also flown a Gobosh 700 to California from Denver. It's a great cross country machine, and my LSA of choice when flying in the mountains. Those flights were all done by pilots holding at least a PPL and a valid medical certificate.

Recently, one of our club members became the first Sport Pilot to fly to Leadville, North America's highest public use airport (field elevation: 9,927' MSL). Taking advantage of the rule changes that went into effect on April 2nd, he flew up there on April 10th.

Cheers,
Chris

However, for safety and comfort, to avoid potentially severe and dangerous mountain generated turbulence, it is best to fly at least 1,500' above mountain peaks and ridges. On a warm summer day, the density altitude could be many thousands of feet higher than the actual altitude . . . one could land at an airport such as the airport in Leadville, CO . . . http://www.lxvairport.com . . . and not be able to take off again, if the density altitude is near your aircraft's maximum service ceiling.

LSA aircraft that I have looked at, typically at best, have a maximum service ceiling of 15,000'. The Sonex homebuilt, experimental aircraft model that uses the Jabiru 6-cylinder, 120HP engine, lists the potential service ceiling as being 23,000'. The Sonex is an amazing aircraft, but I don't think that the designers intended its primary mission to be a true, hard-core, cross country machine, for two people. The Sonex is like a small sports car, very tight accommodations, and very little space for baggage / storage. Further, not everyone has the time, space, ability, or desire to build their own aircraft.
