The Sonex is fine for cross country, if you're not carrying too much gear (40lb max), but with the Jab 3300 it has short legs, with a range of about 400 miles. With the Aerovee engine that goes way up to 550 miles, but 80hp might not be enough juice in a big mountain downdraft.

If you're talking two people, lots of additional baggage, and long range, I'd look at the CTSW/CTLS and the Remos G600/GX. The CT has the advantage of a ballistic chute as standard equipment, which could save your bacon in a bad mountain experience.

The T211 Thorpedo also has a 600+lb useful load if you want a low wing.

The Sonex is like a small sports car, very tight accommodations, and very little space for baggage / storage. Further, not everyone has the time, space, ability, or desire to build their own aircraft.
