RE: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group 406 MHZ ELT

It’s a built-in.  The former owner of the airplane had it installed before I bought it.

And I'm presuming you have one of the "new" ones? (Built-in or portable?)

I can tell you a funny  (now) story about the one in my Cherokee.

I was taking a friend up on a flight (nervous flyer) and during taxi I had reached over to adjust the Intercom for him.  I (unbeknownst to me) accidently flipped the ACTIVATE switch on the ELT which was right below my Intercom switches.  While taxing, I was listening to the AWOS and kept hearing a “whoop whoop”, but it didn’t register with me what it was.  I did my run up and announced my intention to depart.  When I keyed up, I REALLY heard the “whoop whoop”…..Realizing that was an ELT whoop, I checked mine and sure enough, it was active.  I quickly turned off the switch and called the airport and surrounding traffic to tell them of my mistake.

I took off with no further issues, until about 5 minutes into the flight.  The FBO called and asked if I was okay.  I said, “Yea, why?”  She told me there was a sergeant whoever on the line saying they had an ELT alarm on my airplane!  They knew the N number, owner, etc. and was checking to see if the airport knew anything about it.  I reminded her of my call before and that was pretty much it.

I’m impressed to know that within less than 15 minutes after flipping that switch, the local emergency responders were trying to track me down.  I LIKE THAT!

Can anybody share their knowledge about these new (to me) doo-dads? I just read that nobody will be listening to my old 121.5 Mhz ELT if it goes off anymore. Is it mandatory that it be upgraded? Do the smaller (cheaper) 406 MHZ PLB's suffice? Can anybody suggest a decent one? Thanks in advance for the info.

Satellite monitoring has ended. In theory, FAA facilities, and "good citizen" pilots flying in your area would still be monitoring the 121.5 ELTs. CAP would, too, if they were looking for you.

There is no requirement that you change. 14 CFR 91.207 mandates when an ELT must be installed in a plane. The regulation spells out TSO-C91 requirement, which pretty much eliminates the PLBs, as your only ELT.

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Part 103 instructor list

Howdy to all the flying lists I know. Feel free to pass along to any others as y'all wish.

Now that most of the dust has settled, I am interested in providing an accurate list of instructors that are willing to teach Part 103 flying. By far it would be best if the instructors themselves reply, but I am OK with getting the information second hand if you know of an instructor that didn't get this message (and wants to be on the list). There is no org affiliation or such requirements, but I can only list those who I know of. If you find yourself on this list and wish to be removed, please feel free to let me know. My idea is to be a one stop who's who for 103. Having a CFI is not a requirement to be on this list, so please don't fib and say you do if you don't have it. There are rumors that some Sport Pilot CFI's do not want to (or cannot) teach Part 103, and this list should help keep them from being bothered.

Please reply to bill at part103 dot org  bill@part103.org to be added. Also if there is an important category I didn't think to add, suggestions are quite welcome. Next Wednesday, if anyone has responded, I will publish the list to www.part103.org for all to see. There will be no fee, nor favoritism, to all entries. I will sort the list as simply as I can, probably by location (state/zip/city/name). I will start off not having price, since this would potentially cause more trouble than I am looking for. That and price does not always imply value.

The information I'd like to have is:

Instructor Name

Address

City, ST Zip

Phone #

CFI (yes/no)

Has plane(vehicle) type: (fixed wing, ppc, trike, BYOP, etc)

Make/Model(s)

website URL

email address

Marketing fluff stuff / biography / about me / whatever you want to see as an elaboration to the above information. Think 1800dentist.com =)

Thanks in advance,

Bill Watson

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group New Guy

The runways are going to be grass for now. I hope we can upgrade later. As for the width we are setting them up as 60' wide......Currently I am talking to an investor to help with the last push on financing. Only need about another $15,000.00 and we will be golden.

lsa,

One key question, or two...

how wide are the runways?

are the runways grass/sod/dirt or asphalt/cement?
