>Can anybody share their knowledge about these new (to me) doo-dads? I just read that nobody will be listening to my old 121.5 Mhz ELT if it goes off anymore. Is it mandatory that it be upgraded? Do the smaller (cheaper) 406 MHZ PLB's suffice? Can anybody suggest a decent one? Thanks in advance for the info.
Satellite monitoring has ended. In theory, FAA facilities, and "good citizen" pilots flying in your area would still be monitoring the 121.5 ELTs. CAP would, too, if they were looking for you.
There is no requirement that you change. 14 CFR 91.207 mandates when an ELT must be installed in a plane. The regulation spells out TSO-C91 requirement, which pretty much eliminates the PLBs, as your only ELT.
