Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group DFW Area - Newbie

Having talked to several glider pilots, and at one point started on glider training thinking to use that as a leg up into powered flight , most agreed that in terms of time and cost it's a lot easier to get a powered pilot's license first and then if interested add glider license and training than the other direction.

Just passing on that view.

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: DFW Area - Newbie

Yeah Pete,

A written agreement is _highly_ wise to have, but no substituted for the intangible thing of both being of high integrity, compatible personalities, and committed to making it work fairly for all involved.
Equally valuable for protection against some of those "what if's", is registering the aircraft as owned by a limited liability corporation (something VERY easy to do in Oregon and many states.)

The AOPA has a draft co-owners operating agreement you can get free.
It's heavy duty and covers that EVERYTHING you could possibly think of right down to "what if one owner wants to shoo a hornet out of the cockpit and the other owner thinks it should be flown back to it's home airport before being ejected?"<g>

I have to echo what W Jones said:

Sport Pilot may be a great way to go.
I got my sport pilot license two years ago,
and the benefits of doing that for me far outweigh the limitations on me as a sport pilot.
I don't regret not going for the private pilot.
(Personally, the only limitation that I kinda wish I didn't have  -- is one that's deeply embedded in the LSA/sport-pilot concept --
is that I can never fly a four seater, even though I'm capable of doing so safely.
That rules our ever buying, or even renting, a four seater and taking my wife AND a guest flying at the same time.)

As Jones implies, if you aren't lucky enough to live near the _very_ few FBOs that have LSAs or LSA-legal aircraft for rent or a flying club that has one,
if you get your sport pilot license and aren't in the position to buy your own aircraft,
you would find you had invested thousands of dollars, much effort and time, in a useless plastic card.

In short, if you're not prepared to buy or build and LSA, check carefully what the LSA rental options around you are.
Just because a flight school has an LSA available for training they won't necessarily rent one to you after you're licensed.

Also, if you do decide to buy an LSA you might consider trying to find a compatible co-buyer/owner or buy into an existing one.
I advertised on Barnstormers (Posting notes on the local airport bulletin boards can work too) and found a local guy who was completely compatible with me and we purchased and LSA together.
It's great because everything costs half as much (hangers, new instruments, whatever) and we have two sets of eyes and two brains
to apply to maintenance and safety issues.

HTH.

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: LSA to Bahamas

Apologies if this is a reply that has already been handled.

Bahamas as mentioned elsewhere here is one of the few places outside the USA that recognizes USA sport pilot licenses as valid.
(I believe Australia does if you jump through certain application hoops in advance.)

The St. Thomas airport STT is a class-D towered airport so a sport pilot would have to have, in addition to their sport pilot license, have an endorsement for flying in controlled airspace. That's not too hard to get.

So the answer is yes it would be legal.

The more practical questions would be the capabilities of the pilot and aircraft.
It's about 250 nautical miles from Florida to the Bahamas, and about 700 from the Bahamas to St. Thomas, over open water.
Not something to do lightly in an aircraft that might have a range of 700 miles, many LSA's have less range.

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Crossing Canada

SUPPOSEDLY a sport pilot could apply to Transport Canada for an exception, but I don't believe anyone has done so let alone gotten an exception.

Curious though if one wanted to fly from Washington state to alaska without landing in Canada a sport pilot could legally do that.
Or stay over international waters off the west coast?
Both seem like dumb ideas but just curious.

As I understand it the Canada rules say you have to have a medical certification, but not sure if they specifiy it has to be an FAA recognized medical certification.
What if your family doc gave you a fancy certificate saying you are medically fit per FAA have the equivalent of a class 3 certification or whatever?

My sport pilot contact at EAA says, unlike the Bahamas, which explicitly allows sport pilots, in his opinion Canada doesn't seem to have any advocates inside pushing for them to do the same.
Too bad, as I really can't see any downside to them to doing so, and it would bring in a tad more tourist revenue, albeit not a flood.

My two cents.

Alex

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group The SportCruiser

Hello Everyone,

A few people are asking about light sport aircraft in the Dallas/Fort Worth area so I thought I would share our awesome airplanes with you. We fly what's arguably the coolest LSA around... the SportCruiser! Also known as the PiperSport. We are located at Addison Airport (KADS).

We do everything...sport, private, instrument, and commercial pilot training, PiperSport rentals, sales, and maintenance. And BIG news!!!......We will soon be offering multi-engine training, as we are acquiring a Cessna 310.

Check us out at USSPORTAIRCRAFT.COM. We have a $95 Introductory flight deal on our website that's a great way to get your feet wet....but be careful, these planes are addicting. You can't just fly once! Give us a call if you have questions...972-735-9099.

Hope this helps anyone looking for a really fun LSA!

-Nathan

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: DFW Area - Newbie

Will,

My name is Nathan. I work at US Sport Aircraft at Addison Airport. I noticed your post about looking to get into LSA. It sounds like Four Winds will be quite convenient as far as distance from your home, but you must check out our planes in Addison (KADS)! I am a private and instrument pilot flying mostly 172's but I recently came to work for US Sport and I have to tell you, our SportCruisers are the coolest light sport planes around. Most of them are 2011 and 2012's, parachute equipped, and an absolute blast to fly! We offer flight training, sales, maintenance, the whole package. We have a $99 Discovery flight deal on our website that's an hour and a half. (30 minute preflight, hour flight). Before you commit to anything I would highly encourage you to come check us out. And feel free to call me at our office if you would like to chat. The number is 972-735-9099. And our website is ussportaircraft.com. We are a small friendly group and would be delighted to help!

Take Care Will!!!

LSA is a excellent and safe way of flying and crossing borders is no problem safely. They should.

For any of you not familiar with this magazine, I think it is without a doubt the very best aviation magazine out there, and best of all, it is free!  It's free in pdf or several e-reader formats, or for a reasonable fee as a paper version that gets mailed to you for old-fashion readers like myself.

A recent exemption by Transport Canada (TC) makes it more affordable and less onerous for Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) from the United States to be flown into Canada.

TC's new Standardized Validation form puts LSA on equal footing with U.S. amateur-built aircraft flying into Canada. U.S. LSA owners simply have to download the Standardized Validation form found at: http://www.tc.gc.ca/civilaviation/maintenance/regsdocs/standardised_validation.htm , and follow other entry requirements such as customs, and fly. The $100 fee has been eliminated.

TC still requires U.S. pilots flying LSA aircraft in Canadian airspace to hold at least a private pilot certificate and a current FAA medical certificate.

What about Canadian pilots wanting to own and fly a LSA in Canada?
COPA chaired an industry/government working group whose task was to review how recreational aircraft are classified and make recommendations for changes, including how to accommodate LSA in Canada. An article 'Status report on Recreational Aviation and Light Sport Aircraft'' http://www.copanational.org/CAWJan10-2En.cfm , summarizes this initiative, which is still under consideration by TC.
