I used to set chokers and pull green chain. We never got over 3 logs per trailer. Those were the days.

James,

That could well be.
They still think it is a logging town, but most of the surrounding mountains
have trees less than 50 years old (bean poles) and all the local mills have
downsized their log cutting tools so they cannot handle logs over 26 inches in
diameter. A typical logging truck now has 50-100 bean poles on it rather than a
single log.

RE: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: North Bend Regional Airport (OTH) i...

Hello all
Landing fees are just another legal way that someone can explore the the pocket book of others. The way I see it,,if the Airport is supported by the federal government or recieveing federal funds to keep or improve the airport,, than landing fees should go straight to the government and not anyone local.. Not the city or town, not director, or anyone else.. In fact,, landing fees should be made out to the FAA or other faculty directing this added burden on the general public.. It is nothing more than black mail and I hope it backfires and slaps them in the face..  if you let this go without contesting this,, your already a socialist and ready for the one world order.

Because based aircraft are paying a monthly rent to stay there. . .whether it is a tie down or a hanger.

Great to hear from ya!

I guess I'm dense and don't understand….if it is a "landing" fee…..why would based aircraft be exempt?  They are using the same facilities as the transient aircraft.

Well, at Santa Monica, if you don't pay (at the office upon landing), they'll send you a bill. Yes, aircraft based there are exempt. These are landing fees, and not "overnight tiedown fees".

Yes, its quite common for airports to charge a tie down fee (often waived or discounted with a fuel purchase, and usually just for overnighters), but this landing fee thing is just another way to nickle/dime people to death. The businesses and restaurants at those airports should be the ones screaming, since it could mean less transient business for them (after all, many of us fly to some place, for the sole purpose of visiting the airport's restaurants).

Lol..yep….that pronunciation gets a lot of people!  My aunt owned the West Court Dairy Queen in Beatrice for many many years, so I’m quite familiar with the town.  I was born and raised about 50 miles southwest of there.

RE: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: North Bend Regional Airport (OTH) i...

Ahhh…Beatrice…..that’s kinda my old home stomping grounds.  I’ve flown in there and spent the night several times and like you, have had nothing but pleasant experiences there.  Another great stop over was on my trip from Davenport Iowa to Sun N Fun, two years ago  (the tornado year).  I had an overnight stop in Portland, TN (1M5).  I landed late in the evening,  but there were a couple guys still there.  They put my Skyeton in a hangar for the night, gave me the keys to the crew car and suggested a clean, cheap hotel.  Great place to stop!

Folks, thankfully these kinds of airports are rare. Let's all remember and patronize the excellent airports that welcome us every time we fly in.

My favorites, are the airports you visit on a multi-day long cross country, who don't charge over night fees, and give you the keys to the airport car so you can get to your hotel and back, just for putting some gas in it when you're done. I remember one time (Beatrice NE), they even gave me a real nice set of aluminium wheel chocks, just for getting gas while I was there.

These smaller airports (often county or town owned) get it, and look at the bigger picture. What they lost in tie down fees, they more than made up for, as the traveler patronizes the restaurants and hotels in the town they're in.

Looks like your town fathers are as stupid as Obama.

From:Subject: RE: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: North Bend Regional Airport (OTH) i...

Fellows,

ON the subject of landing fees (and other bad decisions by city fathers).

At my local airport, (strom field) there is (currently) no landing nor tiedown fee.

Each year the local town has a 'big' Loggers Jubilee festival during the second
weekend in August.

A few years back a bi-plane guy wanted to supply touring around Mt St Helens and
Mt Rainier, rides to the tourists during the Loggers Jubilee, for a very nominal
fee (for gas and oil).
He was driven out by the 'town fathers' who told the pilot there would be a 'per
person' landing fee ($25 I think) for each and every landing.

The result is the pilot powered up and left, with narry a passenger to show for
the whole weekend. ( This would have been great for the local community and
introduced many to the fun of flying a small plane.)

The pilot has not been back.

That short sightedness is typical of the 'town fathers'.
Not only for quickly destroying the Loggers Jubilee but also destroying the airport.

The town does receive a major amount ofU.S./FAA money every year for airport
maintenance.
Still it is a hassle just to get the town to mow the grass and replace runway
lights when they burn out.
Sweeping the runways and taxiways on a regular basis is beyond their ability as
is fixing the drainage so the infield is not flooded most of the year.
It took nearly two years to get the radio receiver that controls the runway
lights replaced, when it had quit working.

The other local airports have had their runway alignment updated by some 10
degrees in the last decade. The town refuses to re-paint the runway numbers
because it will cost a few bucks.
(They did re-paint the hold short and center lines about a decade ago and put a
coating of prima-teen over the gravel runway and taxiways back in the '80s.
A few years ago, they put double garage doors on two of the open 'T' hangers.
They seem to think that is plenty of maintenance.)

the runway used to be ~4000' long. The wisdom of the town fathers (and clout of
the lone resident on a side road) resulted in the runway being cut down to 1800'
and the side road extended across where the runway used to be, just so the one
lone resident could have a more direct route into town.

One of the results of the lack of proper surface maintenance is nearly every
flight results in one or more new chips taken out of the our prop blades.

The town tries to charge landing and tiedown fees. However, they are unwilling
to designate a person to collect such fees. I'm sure such fees, if vigorously
collected, would eliminate the aircraft traffic at the airport.

Just to help things along, a few years ago, we had a mayor that wanted to
'upgrade' the town. One of his projects was an excellent sign near the airport
entrance that could be easily read from the highway (large, white with black
lettering) The town fathers caused the mayor to be ousted, then replaced the
good sign with a two tone brown, unreadable sign.

There are already lots of empty businesses in town due to the high taxes.
Just this last year, one of the two grocery stores in town went out of business.
Even most of the taverns are out of business.

It does not help that some of the city fathers want to tear down the airport and
build a strip mall.
Note: The airport is quite a ways off the highway, so such a strip mall would be
a failure)

There are some local pilots that would like to keep their planes at the airport.
However, the town fathers refuse to allow any more hangers (currently 7) to be
built.

So, landing fees are not the only bad things that can happen to a local airport.
The town fathers are the biggest problem.

Two years ago, I flew a Cherokee 180 from Wichita to Houston, got diverted to Sugarland International.

They had a "kind" of a landing fee.  It was more of a overnight fee. . . .maybe 10 dollars a night? (Can't remember the exact).  If you purchased enough gas (maybe 10 gallons?) they waved that fee. I think I remember purchasing about 25 gallons of Gas, and they waved my 3 night stay over.

I did notice one thing.  . . I remembered seeing very few airplanes at that airport, and it was a rather large airport for the most part, with a controller.

Maybe if they would change their tactics, they would be busier?
