Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Sport pilot getting Private Pilot license, interesting issues?

Yes.  Remember this endorsement predates sport pilot.  Before profieciency checks came into being under the sport pilot rules, how did you get signed off to fly a trike or gyroplane? Unless it fit in part 103 (which doesn't need a sign off), it would have been nearly impossible to find anyone who could sign you legally sign you off to transition to this model. This still wouldn't let you carry a passenger but at least gave a CFI privilages similar to a proficiency check for solo.

Interesting, though.

It means in theory if a CFI endorsed a sport pilot to solo as you described on a Skyhawk , or whatever, that sport pilot could fly that non LSA aircraft and any of the same model forever.... As long she/he carried no passengers.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group What have you been flying this summer?

I got my Airworthiness Certificate on my Highlander Super STOL in May and sold the helicopter the same day, so now down to one EAB airplane and one ELSA trike.  I'm pretty much in the "not in a hurry to get anywhere but have lots of fun doing it" mode.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group What have you been flying this summer?

lyn, Helen, others,

This morning, about 1 hour after sunrise, opened the hanger.
Within another 30 minutes my Apex trike leaped into the air.
Climbing at over 1300'/min out of the 945' asl airport,
we were soon at over 5k' and heading SW.
With a 20mph tailwind and 50mph IAS (It was calm on the ground)
we were soon circling over our destination. (a dam, some 25miles distant)

What a lovely (and quite smooth) ride, with marvellous views of the country side.

The trip back to the airport took nearly twice as long, but did give lots of
time to enjoy the view.

Landing in our valley airport was very 'interesting' with 20mph wind over the
surrounding mountains and only 1-2 across the runway, on the ground.

A total of 46minutes, 3.5gal fuel and not a single hiccup from the engine.
(a Hirth F-30 105hp fuel injected engine)

as McDonalds' says. "I'm loving it"
