Last Saturday I instructed in a Quicksilver MXL-II. Had fun with having the pilot close his eyes (ifr sim) and fly as far as he dared, then turn a 180 to escape from the "clouds". He flew for a minute before his 180.
Then we practiced a simple sounding task (rated pilots), fly a square with 5 second sides while at descent power - with a focus on maintaining 45mph. I've done this several times and haven't seen anyone maintain +-5mph for 1000' of descent (2 minutes) - usually passing through both. Some flew triangles and pentagons while focused on the airspeed indicator, and still blew through 5mph. It seems they start off doing fairly well for one lap, then start thinking and rapidly get worse by flying the guage instead of attitude. The wrap up debreifing or 2nd attempt is where I remind them to pick an attitude and make small changes to the next corner or side based on what the airspeed guage said.
Of course this is all stuff we all *know*, but when we get competitive, our actions go to pot.
Before flying, we had our monthly club meeting with about 35 attending. This month was our elections and I lost and have to be on the board for the upcoming year. But the bright side is we had BBQ Tri tip, hot Italian sausages, and grilled veggies after our meeting. We had 6 planes flying on Saturday, before and after the meeting.

Hey gang, we have over 2000 members on this super quiet list. I'm sure at least some of you must be enjoying flying this summer. What are you flying and where have enjoyed exploring this spring/summer?
