Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group What have you been flying this summer?

Helen,

Since you ask...

I spent all of last fall/winter chasing down a problem with my Hirth F-30 engine
on my Apex trike (N50433)
Finally found the root of the problem.
The engine temperature sensor, a thermistor, had cracked, so the ECU always
thought the engine was 'very' cold.
This made for very unreliable idle.
(I really like my engine to keep running on approach and when gliding.)
Even with the idle problem, I managed some 25 hours over the Winter/Spring.

Since replacing the thermistor, the weather has been vacillating between
cold/windy/rain and short stretches of days with sun and temperatures in the
80-90f range.

With so much down time, I'm spending most of my flying
1) recalibrating the fuel burn (it is about 2/3rds of what it was before the new
thermistor.)
2) flying patterns, to rub the rust off my landings.
(todays' landings were in no wind, with lots of thermal activity,
which made the final approach 'interesting'.)

My brother flies a ATF/northwing trike.
He had an engine out Yesterday, when ~2miles from the airport and 600' agl.
Fortunately his trike has a very good glide, so he glided back to the airport
for an excellent dead stick landing.

His engine is a Hirth F-33, fuel injected.
Our analysis indicates the fuel pressure regulator
ingested a bit of 'fod'.

We have another fuel pressure regulator on order.
In the mean time, we completely cleaned the fuel lines
and replaced both the high pressure fuel filter and the suction side fuel filter.
He had been flying several times a week and often more than once per day,
until the fuel delivery problem.

We both fly out of strom field (39P), on the south side of Morton, WA.

What have you been up to, Helen?

least some of you must be enjoying flying this summer. What are you flying and
where have enjoyed exploring this spring/summer?
