Hi John,

I'm well aware that elimination of the two-seat UL trainer and the BFI (Basic Flight Instructor) between 2004 and 2008 as darn near killed UL flying.
And made it much more expensive and or much more dangerous for a newbie to get into UL flying. I tell that to anyone who will listen.

I would repeat the specifics about that but I'm sure you, and MOST of us here, understand that -- and I think it's been discussed here before:
In short, unlike back in 2003, today if you want to get into UL flying and have no experience you _can_ go out and build or buy a part 103 single seater. But you'd have to jump in and try to fly it with no training other than some ground study or coaching, OR try like hell to find a CFI with a somewhat similar two seater to take you up (good luck in finding that situation -- very far and few between) and it will cost you FAR more to get than training than back in 2003 when there were likely several two seat UL trainer aircraft and BFIs in your area willing and able to offer economical training.

And in turn has cut off at least PART of the source of future GA pilots... at a time when the GA community is crying about "where are the new pilots going to come from."
The LSA/sport pilot initiative (which I personally have benefited from) has NOT created the flood of new pilots that it was hoped it would... and is very unlikely to do so.

Even though there was some abuse of use of two seat trainers for owners to fly their friends around OTHER than for training IMO It was a very bad move for UL and indirectly a bad move for GA to kill the BFI and two-seat UL-trainer.
Irritates me to contemplate it.

But why do you want beat it to death more John?
What's the point?
Unless you can suggest something constructive to do ABOUT it?

All I can think of is IF you can systematically document that significantly larger numbers or even "proportions of" UL pilots -- particularly NEW UL pilots -- are getting crashed, and/or hurt, and/or killed MAYBE you and US ultralight association can get EAA and AOPA to go back to the FAA and try to ressurect the BFI and two seat trainer.

Alex
