Hello
the issue now is lower power use
HID delivers that LED is a bit lower but we are getting into the land of diminishing returns 2.5A is a big step from 8A I can get anything that is needed if I can arrange a reasonable order and a means of cutting freight

Hello Peter; I believe a HID will outperform a LED in candlepower? But is the need for more candlepower in the light plane category? The trick is breaking into the LED market, with low energy consumption, very cool operation, easy installation and unlimited life which is currently hot in light plane movement. Low cost is a great incentive over LED if one can pull it off, maybe the Chinese? Ed

Hello Edthe kits are there if you had followed the link UV isn't an issue on cars which have a far higher possibility of people being exposed The prop is far more likely to get them than them suffering UV exposure They generate less heat than incandescent or halogen lighting for the same input by turning the electrical input into visible light If you read the Wiki link it mentioned that too The return on investment is the current draw 2.5 amps versus 8 amps and the long life (2000+ hours versus 80 hours) and reliabilityIf there is enough interest I can probably source the kits from China at a good pricePeter

HID lighting. (High Intensity Discharge) Great technology, very bright lights, low energy consumption. However, I am afraid you will not find a plug and play conversion for the 4509? There is also the UV and heat issue to deal with plus other considerations. My guess is that the LSLA manufacture would become very nervous with an in-field conversion attempt that they did not specifically design for installation. In the end the cost benefit may not not there? My two cents worth.A HID primer: http://www.edn.com/design/power-management/4363767/HID-lighting-technology-fundamentalsEd-----Original Message-----

HelloYou shield the wiring (if needed) from the power supply unit to the light Usually it will be already shielded from the factory as it is supplied in a kit Power supply wiring and lightPeter

When you say "shield the wiring" do you mean rewire the entire plane?

HelloHID is high intensity discharge The possible aircraft issues are interference as it is a high voltage You may need to shield the wiring http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-intensity_discharge_lampIts 35W so 1/3 the current Has replaceable globes at about $14 BTW Mercedes BMW Audi Ferrari use themPeter

Interesting. What exactly is an HID lamp and is there a downside?

The answer is yes for most Rotax powered aircraft that lack an external
alternator.
