Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: What makes an airplane turn?

Jim, cool video. I want to go for a ride in the Decathalon someday...not sure about that spin though!!

Question...While flying knife edge, the aircraft is able to produce lift and maintain straight and level flight – or close to it anyways. As you stated, this lift is coming from the fuselage, making the fuselage a symmetrical airfoil that produces lift on one side or the other depending on angle of attack and rudder position. With wings straight and level, adding rudder input will cause the fuselage to yaw left or right and produce lift to the left or to the right. Would this technically be considered a turn from the horizontal component of lift, or is it just skidding the aircraft sideways?

I am in total agreement that the elevator is the primary control surface that makes an aircraft turn as it is able to change the AOA of the wing which creates the majority of lift.

Hi Geo,
When I first read Bill's post I had the same thought and then realized he meant when he wrote "the nose rises" he was meaning in reference to the pilot's view out the front, not relative to the horizon.  You are absolutely correct that you use the rudder to point the noise in reference to the horizon.  And your point and Bill's point were exactly what I was trying to demonstrate with my video.  Thanks!

"Imagine knife edge flight for a bit. Pull
back on the stick and the nose rises. Push and the nose goes down"

Referring to the above, in a knife edge turn, the elevator tighten the turn and you use the rudders to control your nose up or down in reference to the horizon.
