<<However, having a Chute option has not shown to improve safety with the Cirrus line of planes.>>
With all their bells and whistles, it sure seems Cirrus airplanes have the potential to be very safe. Positional awareness via gps/moving map, real-time engine monitoring, crash cage and high-g seats, airbags in newer models, traffic and terrain warnings, etc., all should eliminate some accident causes or mitigate the results of an accident.
I was a Cirrus owner for about 3 years, and the Cirrus Owner's and Pilot's Ass'n pores over the particulars of each and every accident/incident.
No surprise, most (but not all) relate back to pilot and/or mechanic error.
Here's a link to an article on the Cirrus safety issue: http://www.cirruspilots.org/content/2009HowSafeIsACirrus.aspx
In any case, there have been about 17 parachute saves and 35 people alive because of the parachute.
Which I suppose only means the accident record (especially the fatal rate) would be even worse without the chute!
Anyway, I guess my point is that unless having a parachute available leads to riskier behavior (a reasonable theory by itself) the parachute in isolation does improve safety!
