Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Trikes in the Pattern

Joe,
Ok. Let me clarify.
There are trikes out there that will fly faster than your Vagabond in cruise, they will out-climb your vagabond pretty easily and they will takeoff and land in a shorter distance than your vagabond and they can definitely fly in the same wind you can fly in.
I love that plane and you are lucky to have one of the 600 or so produced but you truly are living in the past about trikes. Just like there is a Cub and there is a Cirrus, there are trikes and there are trikes.
Trikes are generally easier to see than helis. They have a large white high wing looking from above them. Looking from below they generally have some color mix. They have gone around the world multiple times, flown above mount Everest and many things in between. They are piss poor for aerobatics however.
If you are ever in west central Florida, stop by and we will take you up in one (on us) or just stop by and attend the free food and drink event at South Lakeland (X-49) Thursday of Sun N Fun Fly-in for a triker's gathering.

This was a regular civil airport and I bet the only reason these guys were there was because of the unusual no-wind conditions. The sea breezes have not yet started this Spring. On a normal summer afternoon, the winds would probably be too strong for these guys to operate confortably. They were curteous and seemed to make all the right radio calls, but they were hard as hell to see. My Vag has a more basic panel than many of your light sport aircraft so, yes, I do look out the windows.

I was doing touch and goes in my Piper Vagabond. Those trikes are hard to see. They both had radios and were communicating well, but they blended in with the ground and were very hard to see in the ground clutter. Just a suggestion: Why can't the tops of the "canopies" (airfoils?) be a bright color like international orange. Also, bright strobes on all the time might help.
