Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: good mic muf

Thanks! I picked up the OA muffs at OSH. May try the "spoon method." :-)

Tell you what I did.... I have a Challenger II CWS and had a really difficult time getting my intercom to work well. The problem was that I had a windshield in front of me and my wife in the back was basically open cockpit. This meant that for me to have the gain low enough to speak easily, that her mike was open and to shut off her open mike it was difficult for me to speak. Dual gains might have helped, but I was not willing to buy another intercom.

So I went and bought two of these:

And that was not enough. So then I grabbed a plastic spoon and trimmed it down an slid it UNDER the leather muff but over the foam. It worked perfectly and now my wife and I have no issues.

Re: In-the-ear headsets (WAS: "Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group good mic muf")

Realistically, I cannot imagine that being a useful application in an actual ATC environment.  While you are doing your playback, the frequency is basically being blocked from use while everyone is waiting on you.  You are better off simply saying to the controller, "Say again" and have him repeat it, because then he at least knows you heard him.  If he hears nothing from you while you're doing your playback, he will call you again anyway.  Will you hear that call while the playback is on?  I doubt it.  If the frequency is so congested that the controller is speaking in bursts of information, your asking him to repeat helps teach him to slow down.  I actually told a controller one day (foreign controller) he could say it 3 times fast, or once slowly, his choice.  I didn't really care either way.  LOL.  The only time I could see a use for the playback would be when copying a clearance or a reroute, but you're still going to have to tell the controller to "Standby" while you're playing it back.  The controller is still tied up.  He can't go to someone else while he's waiting for you to play with your gadget.  So, you may as well just have him read it again, write down the points you missed on the first one, and then read it back to him and you're done.

Lyle - after our conversation offline (:D) I'm still wanting to try these headsets and will be looking at them at Oshkosh this next week. What intrigued me is the app that Lightspeed just came out with for recording audio and also being able to do "instant" playback. To me that would be extremely appealing - if it works well and fast. One of the toughest things I have personally is retaining the quick burst if information ATC passes along to me and I would absolutely LOVE to have that feature in a headset.

Given that it looks like the Clarity simply has the bluetooth add-on that is available for most headsets (including/possibly Lightspeeds adaptation) I would hope that feature would be available in the Clarity soon. :D

One of these days I'll be up your way. :)

RE: In-the-ear headsets (WAS: "Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group good mic muf")

No..their mic muffs are not big huge noise canceling because the noise canceling is done electronically by the mic.  I'd think Sporty's would have something.

As to the foam inserts, again, it is a personal preference thing.  I can tell you that the foam is actually softer than your skin, which means they are extremely comfortable.  When I am doing demo's and someone says they can't stand anything in their ears, if I can get them distracted for about 60 seconds, they suddenly realize they cannot feel the ear plugs anymore.  We offer different sizes of plugs and you do need to get the right ones.  Amazingly, a bigger plug many times is not the answer.  If it feels like the plug is falling out of your ear, it's probably too big.  You need to have the plug big enough to seal, but not too big.

If nothing else, I'd encourage you to go by the booth and ask them for a set of the ear plugs they give away.  They're made from the same foam and GREAT for the air show.

These things are so comfortable, that I'll put my headset on at 9AM and take them off at 5PM, when the show closes, then sleep in the foam earplugs at night because the campground is so noisy. Again, personal preference allows me to do that.  They might not be for you.

I don't think they'd work for me.  I have a terrible time getting earplugs to stay in my ears and when I do, they hurt.

Lyle, does CA have some sort of mic muf that will work with my David Clark?  I'm super busy with meetings and selling planes but will stop by if you are saying they do.

Re: In-the-ear headsets (WAS: "Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group good mic muf")

My QT came with two different sizes of foam ear plugs and one or two of the standard plastic type standard push in ear plugs with little rings on them that seal.  So, it's kind of a personal preference thing.  I can't imagine you wouldn't be able to find a set that worked and stayed in.  I also can't imagine ear plugs hurting more than head clamps, but we're all built different so if they hurt you, can't argue with that.

RE: In-the-ear headsets (WAS: "Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group good mic muf")

Yep.  Quiet Technologies makes a good set and is cheaper than the Clarity's.  They use a less expensive speaker and only one of them, so you can't get true stereo, but if that is not an issue, then they are  good alternative.  At Sun N Fun, Quiet sets up their booth just a few spaces down from us.   We get asked, routinely, what the difference is and we tell the people to go try theirs out.  They may like them better or they may not.  It truly is personal preference.

It's the same thing with our TSO'd set.  Very few pilots are actually REQUIRED to use TSO'd headsets but enough that we ended up offering them.  They are slightly lighter yet, and have a bit different "feel" to them.  They cost more, as they are TSO'd.  A number of people like them more than the standard set and end up buying them instead, because of the personal feel.  I happen to like the feel of the standard set better.  One of the employees of the company likes the Pro set better.  All personal feel……try them both at OSH.

I looked at both Clarity Aloft and Quiet Technologies and chose the QT.  Replacement parts (foam earpieces) were much simpler and I just liked them better.  Personal preference.  Check out both at OSH.  Here is the QT website.  http://www.quiettechnologies.com/  My son and I ended up both getting a set (OSH special plus buying 2 made it even cheaper) and I no longer use my Dave Clarks at all and totally regret spending the money on ANR which I no longer use.  This is comfortable, quiet, so light I forget I'm wearing it on a cross country.  I may pick up another set at OSH this year, and sell my ANR.  I had a friend visiting and she is pretty small and after I let her use my headset one time, she refused to give it back.  So, I was stuck with the Dave Clarks until she left.  Here's a video of her using it and you can see how light weight it is.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQQE04AwFcY&feature=youtu.be I do acro and never have a problem with it leaving my head during negative Gs.

Re: In-the-ear headsets (WAS: "Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group good mic muf")

I don't think they'd work for me.  I have a terrible time getting earplugs to stay in my ears and when I do, they hurt.

Lyle, does CA have some sort of mic muf that will work with my David Clark?  I'm super busy with meetings and selling planes but will stop by if you are saying they do.

Try Oregon Aero, they have a nice little wind muff that has a leather cover, it seems to keep the noise down quiet nicely.

RE: In-the-ear headsets (WAS: "Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group good mic muf")

I can tell you from practical use that they work EXTREMELY well for noise cancelation.  In fact, they the same type of noise cancelling used by Harrier and Blackhawk pilots.  If they take out that noise, I’m pretty sure they’ll handle the average GA airplane.

They are extremely light and comfortable.  No head clamping or heavy weight for hours of flying.

As to the noise canceling on the mic, it has active noise canceling.  I could call you from my airplane and have a conversation and you would not be able to tell that I’m in the air.  As for wind noise, I also use my headset as a hands free cellular headset.  I have driven down the interstate at 75 mph, with the windows wide open and the person I was talking to could not hear the wind.

Re: In-the-ear headsets (WAS: "Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group good mic muf")

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: good mic muf

Hi Helen,

There are commercial leather or plastic little "socks" that LightSpeed (and probably others) sell for $3 that go over the foam rubber muff that's usually already on the mike. It is specifically for the purpose of minimizing cockpit noise getting into the mike. It has a tiny hole on ONE side (the side towards your lips. It helps.

Even in a standard cockpit withOUT doors off anything one can do to prevent cockpit noise (which is often quite high ... remember it's so high we're all wearing heavy duty sound muffling covers over our ears) from going into the mike when we PTT would help improve quality of our transmissions.

Here's two ideas I have thought of but have not tried yet:
Cut a pingpong ball in half and mount it over the mike so the open end goes toward your lips. Try the same thing with half of a tennis ball.
If anyone tries this before I do, and reports back would love to hear if it helps.

Even cupping your hand over the mike when transmitting (if both hands aren't occupied flying) can help.

Any other ideas?

Alex

So now that we have the Searey up and flying - with the windows open in
this daily 100 degree heat we've had all summer here in MD, I was
wondering, is there a better mic muf out there in the world? I know a
lot of you folks run around in flying machines sans doors, sometime sans
cockpits. What do you do to deal with the wind on the mic? Is there
something I can pick up at OSH next week?

BTW, I'll be working the Searey booth in the LSA mall. Stop by. I'd
love to meet folks.

Helen  I use a Nerf ball cut in half  then slip the mike into a slit  and sew it in place
it creates  a wind break large enough to dampen windy  the noise

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Craig and Barry - Craig's quest to land in all 48 states

Why. Its completely and utterly legal. Barry flies that route all the time. Once the park ranger called NYC Police helicopter on him last year and it was a big hoo-haa and EAA and AOPA were calling for his license without knowing jack. He was completely legal, within the bounds of all FARs and in April FARs for trikes were changed so that a trike can basically fly low like helicopters and he was within his rights to exercise that right for safety as a few Mooneys were passing him at the height airplanes are supposed to fly at so being lower was safer for him in the corridor.

I think he starts his flights in Connecticut where Barry is based.

Only if you didn't get a one time instructor endorsement. Rec pilot is still around, and still not very popular. But, think of Sport Pilot as "rec pilot version 2.0". In many ways, it is similar... where you have a core set of privileges. Additional privileges are granted with instructor endorsements. Rec pilot also has a similar "Airspace" endorsement, just like Sport Pilot.

There is no distance limitation in Sport – other than limitations on International recognition.

The signoffs available are for flying in controlled airspace. There is no increase in weight except for floatplane.
