Re: Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group LSA

IMHO its a real shame too, not only because of the weight problem but just how wonderful of an engine Rotaxes have proven to be for a flight school.  Seems I'm pulling students and renters out of the weeds around the runway way too frequently.  Each would have been an engine tear down after the prop strike on the O200 meaning weeks to months of down time and thousands of dollars in inspection costs. The Rotax slipper clutch has saved us from such every time saving a small fortune.  What more could a flight school ask for?

I'm pretty sure they chose the American built engine instead of the European one because their distributors all had mechanics that were VERY familiar with the American built enginge. They have been using it in their planes for decades.

BUT... I really believe that they WILL later allow modifications to the Rotax 912. Or some entrepeneur will come up with an STC allowing the swap.
If I remember correctly, SLSA's are NOT allowed to have ANY changes not approved by the manufacturer. And if the LSA market takes off, they will have to consider using whatever their competitors use to make more sales. That is the beauty of a capitalistic system, competition eventually wins out.
