Normally in email responses our email programs automaticially post full copies of what we're replying to below our replies. Useful indeed. Even if, or maybe BECAUSE to has the full record of replies to replies to replies all in one email for easy reference
Our software does the same thing when we post here into the group email and the site archive.
That has two downsides:
The probably minor one is that Yahoogroups actually has a limit on how much old text they'll store in our archives, and having old text repeated in every subsequent reply brings closer the day when they'll delete the oldest posts. That limit is unknown, and for all I know it'll take 30 years for us to exceed it. So that's not my issue.
The _other_ downside is for folks like me who get the posts from here in a daily digest in which all the day's posts are in one email.
That means by the time three people have replied I get the original post, the reply with another copy of the original post, the reply-to-the-reply (which includes the original, the reply to the original, the reetc, etc, etc. In short, I end up with sometimes as many as 12 copies of the original, multiple copies of replies-to-replies-to-replies.
Makes for a very confusing to read digest and a very long one. ;-)
The digest I opened this morning had 20 posts -- most with the replies-tto-replies-to-replies in them
for an amazing total of over 14,000 words in it -- most duplicates.
REQUEST: If anyone would be willing to "trim off" all but maybe the one most recent post below their new reply that would make for more elegant easier to read digests.
Even just putting some extra carriage-returns (blank lines) below the very bottom of a post before clicking "Send" (as I did below my signature) helps me see where one post REALLY ends.
Think of it as "cockpit management" ;-) ?
Just a thought/request. No replies (or <g> replies-to-replies-to-replies) needed. This will either make sense to you or not, and you'll either be willing and able to do the "trimming" or not.
