RE: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Answer to Rich's Question

Mike,

Next time you are up, set a 30 degree bank and push the stick forward to account for the lack of elevator needed to counteract gravity. Apply opposite rudder to replace the lack of needed elevator to counteract gravity. While banked at 30 degrees, your gravity counteraction is now 2/3 elevator and 1/3 rudder. To position these controls in any other manner would be to position them in something other than straight and level flight with a proper resistance to the gravity pull.

I bet you don't turn worth a darn. If you have done this precisely, you might find that you are still travelling in the same direction as you started, albeit at a 30 degree bank angle.

Now if you want to turn, you can let the elevator and rudder go neutral and have each of those excess 1/3's change your direction.

-----------------------------------------------------

Fundamental Question for all Pilots
What is the primary control surface you use when turning an airplane?
------------------------------------------------------

Over 90% of the time spent turning,
90% of airplanes are turned with angles of bank (AoB) less than 40°.
It's not necessary to get confused by the rare turns,
eg; those with over 70 degree AoB, and those in which the pilot
has a special desire to make the turn as tight as possible.

I think the question is best answered
with a simple common turn at an AoB of 30°.
