The "ELT check" Richard alluded to, is an ANNUAL check, and can be performed by the owner (although its most commonly performed by the person doing the annual. No biggie.. the check takes about 5-10 minutes.

So, whether or not to buy a portable 406 unit, is personal preference, just like its personal preference as to whether you think a BRS should be installed in your plane. On one hand, you could argue that if you go down in a remote area, the chances of the 406 unit being detected are much greater than the 121.5 ELT. Then again, if you crash real bad, and are unable to physically activate the PLB, what good does it do? That's a real toughy.

Yeah, I'll probably upgrade to a 406 unit "one of these days" when the prices are a little more reasonable. In the mean time, I'll carry my cell phone, a portable COMM, and get ATC flight following whenever I'm crossing the outback.
