The ATP's that I know all say that they still monitor 121.5 when they are overflying the USA.  I'm sure they would relay a distress signal to the proper authorities.

The ONLY people that is listening to the 121.5 freq. is Civil Air Patrol. The government is now listening to the 406 mhz frequencies.
