Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Hand controls

The wheelchair space  is simple.  How to get it mounted if you are alone is different.  And really depends on the pilot and what he or she can do.  I work with the disabled daily and am amazed every day with what they can do.  The weedhopper I saw had one down tube from the engine to the axle that could be removed to allow access.  A Starflight or TX for that matter just needs a retractable tail skid to make the plane sit on all three wheels to load.  That part is simple and may add about 3# overall weight to the plane.  An MX or Starflight sitting level should be at the right height for a transfer from a wheel chair.  About transporting a wheel chair it really depends on whether you are flying the pattern or going somewhere.  Roger P

Hello
Converting to hand controls is easy. The difficulty is with gaining access. Is it really necessary to take the wheelchair?

There are several aircraft that can work or be adapted to work.  I have seen a Weedhopper flown by a paraplegic pilot.  The nose wheel was connected to the stick.  I know a Starflight can be adapted and would have no trouble hauling a wheel chair.  Roger P

I've got a friend is getting the aviation bug and is looking at what is

available that he could fly. He has no use of his legs so would need something

that is only, or can be fitted with hand controls. He also would need to have a

configuration to which he could mount or carry his wheelchair (16#) with him. It

looks like a trike would most likely be the ticket, but I'm not well versed on

the various layouts and/or modifications that can be done with the various

models of trikes. But then I know we have some of you who are well versed in

this area.
