Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: blame game

I remember it a LITTLE differently Jim:
I remember a lot of "phony" instructors, "FAT ultralights" , and incompetent
operators that thought they could get away with "stretching" the rules 'till
they broke the system.
You can't blame the new system for ruining the old system, blame the selfish
bastards that abused the system so badly that it had to be abandoned.

In my opinion the above is correct but not the whole story. In most cases with regulations it all comes down to the DOLLAR!  Taxes, state revenues and identifying who has what and it's value. Can't do that if it's unregistered. The FAA also wanted to line up the little people selling rides in un-certificated and in some cases, untrustworthy craft without the FAA blessed pilot training. A few cases of non radioed UL's wondering into patterns, cutting off larger GA types and belligerent attitudes of some UL pilots when confronted with pattern etiquette. I'm a 30 year + CFI and  have never had a problem mixing it up with the UL crowd but I respect everyone's abilities, knowledge and attitudes. I've owned and flown a few ULs and find most are just as safe as spam cans. There are still a few defiant fat UL drivers that will push the feds to require anything that carries a human and flies to be registered/certified.
