The point of engineering is to reduce the chances of having to make changes but there is nothing that can replace actual field experience. Its a development life-cycle that matures any product and feedback from the field is essential to complete that circle.

As late as about 3 years back, Rotax's US distributor decided to not offer any Rotax 912ULS engines in their territory without the slipper clutch and heavy duty starter as standard while Rotax, Austria as a factory kept offering it to the European market. That was because experience showed that without those items there is trouble. Just last year after field experience and BullyHawk producing an after-market soft start module for the high compression 912S, Rotax factory made the soft start right into their new coils as standard. That certainly wasn't because Rotax factory started by knowing everything or even knowing the best. No one can. Products improve when life-cycle circle completes its whole trip.

Thank you so much for the post and surly the enlightenment. For those poor souls who search for information on this forum attempting to gain more insight on topics not learned or found elsewhere beware; That even though the information given from people with decades of engine, airframe work experience and thousands of hours flight experience is considered by some as junk science from junk yard mechanics. And then there are others here who have built and flown dozens of aircraft from kits and still more here in the manufacturing, sales, training and distribution business. They too could fall into the same sub-category. So of course, THINK. . or possibly just do not seek advice or help here; god knows what you may learn. Just thinking again as advised; I wonder what became of all the in-field problems discovered over the years by many of us junk yard mechanics that really work with and use the Rotax engines daily. Then forwarding this to the experts who BAR NONE, KNOW IT ALL that actually make engines only to learn from these experts that the problems must be caused by the user because everything they put into print, say or do is infallible. Curiously we learn later with new engines coming of the assembly line now mysteriously have improvements and changes made addressing those same situations given. I further wonder how many lives we may have saved from our laughable junk yard science and experience?
