Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Keeping Current

John,

I have flown some part 103 trikes that met the limitations of part 103.

However, I have also flown 103 trikes that met the exemption parameters of 10
gallons fuel and 496 pounds.

In fact, my current trike, 460 pounds, 10 gallon fuel was perfectly legal until
LSA/SP.

My trike is long since legal again with an airworthiness certificate, 'N'
number, etc and registered under the grandfather provisions of LSA as an ELSA.

So, my only current 'ax to grind' is the astm weight limit on the front seat of
the SLSA trikes of only 225 pounds.

RE: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: A starting point - 2nd flight

alan, my first attempt at taxiing was something for the books. it was not
pretty. don't know what you're training in but once you get the hang of it
it'll be second nature to you. just remember not to taxi faster than a
brisk walk and be sure to orient the ailerons properly for the wind. you'll
be fine. I still remember the first time I was allowed to take off...what a
rush!

Today was my second time up. The week dragged by with much anticipation for
today. I read my student book cover to cover twice, took notes for
questions I wanted to ask, filled in all the blanks according to the
aircraft I am studying in, and went through every normal procedure in my
head for the week.

This morning I got to do the pre flight, taxi, run-up, and TAKE-OFF under my
own control. What a rush!

Once up I learned rudder and aileron control to make 30 degree turns, and
barrel maneuvers while pointed at a fixed point to keep the plane in line.
This took a few tries, but then I was able to coordinate the foot pedals
with the stick and kept it pointing straight through the maneuver.
The time flew by (quite literally) and before I knew it, I was instructed to
head back to the airport and make our decent. My instructor took over and
brought us in for the final and landing.

I am looking forward to next week! I hope I can at least follow the yellow
line by then while taxiing. That seems the hardest part so far.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Keeping Current

Mike,

I'm not saying anything against UL.
There was one of the orgs that was giving away instructor certificates like they
were candy.

I DO have a very low regard for SP/LSA. Including the ASTM setting the weight
limit on the front seat of a trike at a mere 225 pounds. (I'm 300 pounds)

P.S.
Mike, we know each other, for instance at Dougs' annual BBQ at the lodi airport.

Comparing the UL situation in 1998 with the SP situation today,
I'd rate 1998 as better.

Incidentally, I was an Ultralight Instructor, and the requirements

Jim,

I got the 100 hours from the days of part 103 UL, before the silliness of LSA/SP
came along.
In those days, an instructor was expected to have 100+ hours in their two seat
UL, along with the principals of instruction course before taking a student aloft.

RE: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Keeping Current

I understand the importance of safety and the value of experience, but I am not sure what your justification is for recommending 100 hours as the standard.  If that was the case, that a person should have 100 hours to be permitted to carry a passenger, then the standard would reflect that.  When I am acting in my role as DPE, a criterion I have in the back of my head as I am evaluating someone is whether or not they fly well enough and exercise the judgment I would want a pilot to possess to take one of my family members, or yours, or his own, for a ride.  The PTS is designed to a standard that if a person can meet it, he flies well enough to meet the standard to carry a passenger.  Is he as good, as experienced, as he will ever be?  Of course not.  Should he exercise good judgment in evaluating conditions?  Always, and that requirement continues forever.  And how do you know what conditions he has been trained in?  I would never recommend a student for a checkride unless he has experienced crosswind landings.   And mid day flying.  So not sure where you get the justification for your statement about "conditions your instructor would have been careful to avoid."  Unless you know the situation personally, but as a general statement or guidance I disagree with the 100 hour philosophy.

Richard B,

Here is my take on your question.

Your a brand new pilot, just got your certificate.

My suggestion...
Don't even think about a passenger until you have well over 100 hours in your
LSA. You need air time, with lots of landings in all kinds of conditions.

Conditions that your instructor would have been careful to avoid.

Conditions like when the wind was calm and you were wide awake in the morning,
but when you arrive back to land a couple of hours later, the wind is 20 mph
across the runway.
That is no time to be risking a passenger, while you try to learn how to handle
a cross wind landing.

Similarly, when the thermals are popping. The first many times, will have your
hands full just flying, it will be no time to have a panicked passenger grabbing
controls and/or puking and/or screaming in your ear.

R. Williams

RE: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Keeping Current

thanks, richard...apprecite the advice. actually my instructor was very pro-active and had me up in 15-18 knot winds...not a 90-degree cross wind as that would be outside the demonstrated ability of the skycatcher (12-knots) but a fairly good crosswind. I've also got well over 100-hrs in the skycatcher.

I did speak with the FSDO yesterday and confirmed that all of my PIC landings, including the check ride landings, do indeed count.

Why dabble in the stock market? You can lose your money at the casino just as easily and the drinks are free!

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Keeping Current

Mr. Smith,

You are correct, the landings you accomplished as PIC on the check-ride count as your currency. Congrats on the Sport license, nice to see more pilots coming aboard, welcome!

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Keeping Current

got a question I hope someone can answer. I've asked my instuctor the same
question and he gave me a 90% certainty on his answer.

I passed my sport pilot check ride the other day and have my temporary
airman certificate. a buddy and I are planning to meet another buddy at an
airport restaurant for breakfast next week. 61.57 of the FAR states that in
order to carry passengers I have to keep current by making 3-landings within
the preceding 90-days. as a student pilot I've got that requirement and
more, both in dual and solo.

my question is....do those landings as a student (both dual and solo/PIC)
count towards currency or must I now do 3-landings as a certified pilot
before I can carry my buddy as a passenger? 61.57 makes no such distinction
and my instructor believes I should be just fine but I thought I would ask
here. during my check ride i made 3-landings and the DPE instructed me to
log the flight as PIC time so with that alone I think I'm covered in terms
of currency for passengers...but I'm not 100% certain. yes, I know I can
just go out to the airport and run the pattern for an hour and I may just do
that but I'm curious as to the answer to my question.

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Check Ride

had my check ride in a SkyCatcher yesterday and...passed it! that is the
culmination of a 30-year dream for me. I started lessons in a Cessna 152
back in 1982 but as so often happens life got in the way...and kept getting
in the way. i'm retired now and decided that i'm not getting any younger
and that if I was going to get this thing done now was the time. yesterday,
my dream came true thanks to my instructor at the JA Flight School at aurora
airport (ARR) and the DPE at janesville, wi (JVL). I'm thinking of going
for my private pilot but for now I'm going to take a step back, exit
training mode and enjoy my new privleges.

to those on the list who are still in training don't give up...keep on doing
what you're doing. the time and effort you're putting in WILL be worth it
when your DPE hands you your temporary airman certificate. to those who may
be deciding whether or not to start training I would encourage you to take a
discovery ride at a flight school. there is absolutely nothing like the
feeling of that first takeoff. and to those of you who have passed your
check ride...i am proud to be a member of the fraternity.

blue skies to all.

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re: Boulder Junction fly-in

Hi Ralph,

Thanks for sharing the Bolder Junction fly in video with us.  I'm located in northern Illinois and about 2 hours in the Sky Catcher to BDJ so I passed on it.  Wisconsin has some great airports.

Fly safely and often,

I was able to take my first flight today! I must admit that this was even
better than I had imagined. After some ground instruction, and preflight
check of the Cessna 162 SkyCatcher, we were taxiing to the runway. A quick
jog off the taxiway into the run-up area, then we were heading down the
runway - AND WE WERE OFF!!!

To my surprise, and joy, I got to take the controls and following my
instructor's direction, made some simple (and admittedly timid) maneuvers.
keep in mind, that I had NEVER done this before today, and just learned what
all the controls were in pre flight.

I am looking forward to next week's lesson with much anticipation. I hope
my dreams tonight are filled with todays incredible experience.

And, I can finally say, (and have the logged entry to prove it!) I have
officially started my journey to becoming a pilot.

Thanks to everyone on their encouragement and support. I'll let you know
when my first solo is.

Alan
