The fact is the majority of small airports have ZERO security.
Also a fact is pilots are unwilling to pay for said security.
My other hobby is racing and you can't believe how many racers are
unwilling to pay $20 a month for a trailer tracking service.
Then their trailer and race car is stolen and they act shocked. wtf?
Guess people figure it's not an issue until it effects them.
If your aircraft is not secure, then why not? You waiting for something to happen
before you insist on better security of some kind?

hangars have electricity so owners should start installing wireless cameras
in them as well as on the outside. might not stop the thieves but it might
help to identify them. saw a "reality" show on cable last night...something
called Airplane Repo. about pilot/repo man teams tracking and reposessing
airplanes. one segment showed the team just walking around a small airport
looking into hangars and so forth as they searched for the target plane.
and all of this was unchallenged by anyone at the airport. now I know this
program is not really reality and the other folks at the airport could
clearly see the camera crews, etc. but I suspect that most people at small
airports do not know the faces of the other legitimate users of that airport
and thus cannot tell if a stranger belongs or doesn't.. just like a lot of
us don't know our next door neighbors or neighbors from several houses down
or across the satreet. you get the point. and when we do see someone that
doesn't belong or looks out of place we are reluctant to challenge or to
make a call to the local police. I spent 35-years working public safety and
spoke with a LOT of people who recalled seeing a stranger lurking around
their next door neighbor's house but didn't think to call 9-1-1 only to find
out too late that their neighbors had been burglarized. I recall one
incident where the bad guys backed up a ryder rental truck and took
everything that wasn't nailed down. the neighbors thought the family was
moving. had they hadn't gotten to know those folks they would've known that
they weren't moving. the point is...get to know your hangar neighbors
andif you see someone who doesn't look right or like they belong call 9-1-1
and have the police check them out.

Burglaries are on the rise here in the Minneapolis area. Just to give you an
idea, there have been three wedding gift boxes stolen by thieves during
weddings. It seems people just don't seem to care about others and want to
spoil their day. There was over $25,500 stolen from our hanger just 2 years
ago. The 912 engine and avionics were taken off my Kolb Kolbra one night.
Let's get the word out that this kind of activity is unacceptable and keep
an eye out for people doing this to our aircraft. If we keep watching, this
kind of thing will stop.
