It is OK for a private pilot who previously had a valid third class medical to diccontinue renewing it. To not go in and get another when due, and instead just start flying LSA aircraft with "sport pilot privilages and limitations."
It is not OK to start your next 3rd class medical application, and discontinue finishing it (withdraw your application) either because you just don't want to bother or because the examiner or the FAA said "to complete this you need to provide us with XXXXXXX."
If you do that it's the same as if you failed and were turned down, and you can NOT go fly LSAs.
By the way:
EAA and AOPA are putting in to the FAA a proposal that would, IF accepted, will allow folks such as you to continue to fly with "drivers license medical" (as do sport pilots) with the added plus that you could fly more aircraft than we sport pilots can.
It proposes you could fly VFR/day with not more than one passenger any single engine aircraft of less than 180hp, etc, under 10,000 feet, etc.
Basically the difference between that(if it happens) and the sport pilot rule is that unlike a Sport Pilot you could still fly a four seat 172 or Tripacer (both of which a sport pilot is excluded from) and quite a variety of other aircraft us sport pilots aren't allowed to because they're a bit over the LSA weight or stall speed or have four seats.

The cancer showed up 5 yrs ago when I was not flying and caused the speech problem which is the ONLY medical problem I have. The radiation during Cancer treatment has caused my tongue to be partially numb, I speak like after some Novocaine . It may get better but no worse, I may have a restriction etc.,or not.
