You are eligible to operate under the Sport Pilot medical rule, then, as
long as you hold a current driver's license and obey any restrictions on
that license. As far as the FAA is concerned, your medical status is good
for Sport Pilot until you show - by failing or not completing a Third Class
medical once you fill in the form and see the doc - that you are no longer
medically fit.

The ultimate decision, as it is for every pilot, is one you make when you
climb into the cockpit before every flight: Am I medically fit to make this
flight? Lots of things can affect that, as major as your cancer (and
congratulations on recovering!) and as minor as a cold.

You should carefully consider whether you want to spend potentially
thousands of dollars on a special issuance medical just to be told you can't
fly SP, either. In your position, if SP was sufficient to my needs, I simply
would let the sleeping dog lie and not see an AME at all.

In fact, that's exactly what I did.
