I remember telling my DPE that he had done what my high school
sweetheart had done many years ago ... kept me up all night in
anticipation!
I was extremely nervous but he was absolutely wonderful! We began on a
cross country and once he was aware that I had a clue as to how to
divert and find my way around we went into doing steep turns, stalls,
slow flight, ect. The more we flew the more my confidence took over
because I was simply doing what I had been taught.
When he finally pulled the power very near the airport I began a long
slow glide to set myself up just a bit high on approach. I asked if I
should try to plant the mains on the markers during the landing. He
said that wasn't required during the engine out simulation. I asked if
I could try it anyways and he said "sure."
The Challenger doesn't have flaps but it does slip pretty well. I told
him to hang onto his head phones and turned the airplane sideways and
made a most beautiful slipping approach. As I straightened out the
airplane and began to level and then flare for landing I could see
that I was going to pretty much nail the landing very close to the
markers.
That's when he said, "go around!" Admittedly that caught me a bit by
surprise but I added power and began to climb away. He was laughing as
I remarked how that he was having too much fun wearing me out.
After being so nervous I found it to be quite enjoyable. If you are
prepared a good DPE will make it a memorable and pleasant event.
Have fun!
