Since the SP certificate does not give aircraft category and class ratings like the PP certificate, then logbook or suitable substitute must be carried with the SP.
The comments from the FAA on log books are below:
"As a result of the FAA's decision to withdraw the proposals to replace sport pilot and flight instructor privileges with aircraft category and class ratings on certificates, the agency is withdrawing this proposed change. Persons exercising sport pilot privileges and flight instructors with a sport pilot rating therefore will need to continue to carry their logbooks or other evidence of required endorsements while in flight. The commenters are correct that § 61.51 currently allows for ''other evidence'' of instructor endorsements; therefore the FAA will continue to allow sport pilots and flight instructors with a sport pilot rating to carry photocopies of required authorized instructor endorsements in lieu of carrying their logbooks."

Correct me if I'm wrong. You only have to carry your log book if you have an
endorsement Such as, travel into class D,C or B, ETC.

Subject: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Catch-22 Conundrum
I was thinking about this the other day with the discussion about having to carry our log books as a sport pilot with us on the plane we are PIC of. In the age of the Internet, and everything going online, there are lots of electronic log books these days, which offers a great deal of features over the standard paper-based ones.
What if I wanted to go paperless and my log book is web-based? What then? I can't quite carry the Internet on-board... :D
(btw - this is a rhetorical question, but I liked the conundrum)
