Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group THE SAFER LANDING PATTERN METHOD

Hmmm interesting..

>* Maintains good visibility for high and low wing aircraft

With my high wing aircraft, my "blind spot" is an issue longer, with one long 180 degree turn, as opposed to two 90's, with a period of "wings level" between the turns.

>* Maintains stall speed increase to less than 7% of normal straight and level stall speed.

So does two gentle 90 degree turns.

The author goes on to say:

> IN 1996, THREE FATALITIES OCCURRED AT SUN 'N FUN WHILE FLYING LOW AND SLOW WITH A STEEP BANK IN THE LANDING PATTERN. A 180 DEGREE TURN FROM DOWNWIND TO FINAL WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THE DEATHS.

Seems to me, the "steep bank" (and low and slow) is the problem. If one needs to make "steep banks", perhaps their pattern is just too tight, or the pilot isn't starting the turn early enough to avoid having to make a steep turn.
