I have an iPad with Foreflight HD. Absolutely perfect device and software for all your charts and a pretty good backup navigation device. $75/year covers all VFR, IFR, TAC and Terminal Procedures. Cheaper than paper and more convenient by a long shot.
3G will receive data depending on altitude and coverage. On a recent trip at 5500 ft from Dallas to Biloxi, I received all aviation weather through Foreflight (and email) until I got to eastern Louisiana. Coverage was spotty the rest of the way. That being said I would never count on being able to receive data during flight. Even in TX there were patches without signal. It was just something to play with on a long flight.
Also, the battery life is quite a bit shorter with 3G on since the iPad is always searching for a signal and cranking up the power.
