You will need to trim the SIM to the new smaller size but I've done it without a problem. I use the iPad on the highway also so it is nice to have that 3G backup. I have also ordered a knee-board for the iPad. iPads and iPhones are great back-ups for flying.

(The main reason for doing so would be the occassional need to get a current radar picture while en route) How different is having a powered-on cell phone from having an iPad connected via 3G. If one had a powered-on cell phone in their pocket (and forgot to turn it off like they are probably supposed to do before take-off) wouldn't it ring if it was in range of a cell tower and somebody tried to call it? I realize this may invoke a discussion that addresses both the legal and the practical aspects of 3G in the air, but is it something that people do? (My headset even has a Bluetooth connection for linking to a cell phone so who is kidding who here?) This is something I visualize doing 2 to 3 times a YEAR so an expensive subscription to XM weather is far from practical for me. Thanks.

Thanks James - good suggestion. I bought an under-cabinet swing-down iPad holder (by Griffin) and mounted it to the ceiling of my plane - works nicely and can be swung out of the way for seeing ahead when needed. (Swivels so Co-Pilot can play Solitaire to keep her mind occupied as well.) By the way, have you read anything about replacing the battery in the iPad? (I'm assuming it won't last forever.)
