I am definitely not in the ken and barbie mold.
I had a very difficult time getting my initial fixed wing training.
The smallest usable Cessna for training was/is the 182.
Even then, we were using a lot of runway and climb rates were anemic.
All the LSA fixed wings I have ever entered left no room and no payload for the
instructor.
I flew hanggliders from 1978 through 2002, when a SUV ran over my legs.
I discovered Trike flying back in 1999. It was a natural progression from the
hanggliders.
In each of the many training flights in a trike, the trike was set up for a much
lighter pilot in the front seat. This resulted in many/most landings being of
the wheelbarrow variety. (no fun and very dangerous)
Fortunately, I lived through that (only broke one front axle, on a Northwing
Apache and folded the front forks on a early Northwing light trike).
My current trike, an Apex Cross, has the geometry setup/modified to handle my
weight in the front seat.
However, it does not have dual flight controls (throttle and kill switches) nor
dual steering/brakes so no WSC CFI SP will give me the proficiency test in it.
(I tried getting those things added to my trike, a miserable failure)
The available WSC CFI SP's (like Paul Hamilton in Carson City Nevada) have dinky
trikes (no leg room) with geometry setup for way less than my weight in the
front seat. (and will not let me take the proficiency test from the back seat.)
Personally, I think taking the proficiency test from the back seat would work
very well in those instructor owned SLSA trikes)
The result is, it has been 8 years since the birth of SP/LSA and I still do not
have the SP certificate. :-(
