Hull may be a personal decision but liability is a whole 'nother ball of
wax. Many states require it and even in those that don't, it's just
silly IMHO not to carry it as any lawsuit, frivolous or not could, put a
pilot into major financial distress for the rest of his life. It's good
to see that people are asking about this sort of thing and exploring all
of their options.
