You document the work done by the previous owner and show as a "group" all the builders have contributed to the 51% rule. You record yourself as the primary builder and the aircraft is thereby considered to be 51% built. You do not have to have actually done 51% of the work by yourself.

Here's what I wonder- If the factory builds 49% of my plane, and I'm supposed to build the other 51%...then what if I bought an unfinished kit with say, 15% already completed? That only leaves me 36% of the work to do, so I can't do 51%. (nor do I want to)
