I'm a new pilot myself so I have some empathy for how reading something and running into an acronym ("ATIS was out of service? ATIS?" --Heck, gonna have to look that one up too!") slows down comprehension. And then there are all the Internet shortcuts such as FWIW, IANAL, etc.)
And sure, some of it is unnecessary and even unconsiously elitist.
But I don't think anyone's trying to make it tough on newcomers.
I agree if someone's inventing their own new acroymn or shortcut they should spell it out.
But there are two darn good reasons for using standard acronynms.
Some of us don't type all that easily and even if we do writing out Automated Terminal Information System is a lot more cumbersome to write or even SAY than ATIS (pronounced "aye-tiss").
And when talking over scratchy static filled radios with wind and engine noise if EVERYone uses the exact same terminology and acronyms and phrases the possibility of confusion and misunderstanding is minimized.
And it really doesn't, in my opinion, take THAT long to pick it up.
There are as one poster pointed out, lists of all the aviation acronyms. And if you find one (be it aviation talk or just web talk) you don't know you can always type into Google
What does ATIS mean?
Or
Definition of ATIS .
What's more your going to have to learn dozen's of symbols and acronyms to be able to read a sectional map. No way around that if you're going to do any kind of flying other than a single seat light ultralight that you can fly without any license.
Neither of us are going to get the whole email group, let alone the whole aviation community to "talk in plain english" ;-)

Now MY pet peeve in email groups is when someone posts a reply and posts a FULL copy of the previous posters email with their reply, and the next guy or gal posts with two older posts attached, and the fourth with all three previous, etc, etc. As you did when you posted.
Makes it a damn nuisence to read when, like me, you get your posts in a digest with say 12 copies each longer than the last all strung together.
Sometimes I nag people to "trim" their replies, but it's less work just to go with the flow and wade through it.
Hope that helps.
My two cents,
Alex
