You'll need to check with Avemco on that. They are great people to talk to so I encourage you to do so. I just called them for some basic numbers to fact check a misinformation campaign the FAA eastern Region FAATeam has put out. They actually have a sign in the lobby of our FSDO where our students sit and wait for their student pilot certificates stating that the fatality rate for LSAs and experimentals is higher than for GA planes. According to Avemco, if you factor out the experimentals, the SLSA fatality rate isn't any higher but the accident rate is twice as high.

Hi Helen,
Can you ask the basis of the rate comparison? Is it for instance, per plane per year insured? Is it per operation (takeoff+landing)? Is it per number of flying hours? Each one would give radically different answers.
Thanks,

SLSAs. Experimental rate is even higher. Source was VP of underwriting at Avemco.

Helen,
When you said,
"the accident rate for SLSA is twice as high as for GA planes",
did you actually mean for all LSA, or just SLSA?
And, what is your source for that statistic?
Thanks,
Mike
