Richard,
I did not say any rules have been proposed saying that all things over 254 have to have a transponder. Nor am I saying I am an advocate of anything of the sort. In fact, I'm not even in favor of the 30 NM Mode C circle. I am merely pointing out how rules get proposed, and what sort of thing leads to them. You think I'm being unreasonable..... Just wait until an airliner on final actually hits a trike flying in Class B airspace and see which side the public sides with and what potential proposals come out to "fix the problem". Then get back to me if you still think I'm unreasonable.
I think Mode C circles are a wast of money that people could be spending on equipment other than transponders. If everyone was able to stay out of the Class B that is inside the Mode C ring, we all wouldn't have to be saddled with this unnecessary expense. But it seems they can't. So, those of us with electrical systems have to buy transponders because a few can't keep track of where they are. And those few happen to be flying without transponders. So you tell me what you think a potential fix for this problem might be if this became a trend. Personally, I see potential fixes that I don't think any of us would like.

Jim B,
(that has a familiar ring Jim B)
Jim, your being a bit unreasonable.
The GA world has been flying without transponders in airplanes that are heavier, fly faster and carry more persons for decades.
No rules have been propagated forcing all >254 pound flying things to have a transponder.
(well, there is the proposed silliness in GB where even hanggliders have to have a transponder; but that is not the U.S.)
