Joe,
Your pre-planning is smart. Be careful of your medical and be sure to get a good pre-medical exam before you go in for your next FAA medical. If you flunk the FAA medical and get a denial, you cannot fly as a Sport Pilot until that's cleared by a new FAA medical issuance.
We have a lot of Coupe owners who've come to Coupes for joyful flying after decades of heavier metal. Coupes do manage to be a joy to fly while still having some utility for cross country - I flew mine from the my home in the Central States to the Atlantic, Pacific, Canadian border, the Gulf a lot of places in between.
The Ercoupe models 415-C and 415-CD qualify as LSA aircraft, suitable to be flown by pilots exercising the privileges of Sport Pilot, acting as pilot-in-command.
If you go shopping, beware of this: the C and CD models can be legally up-converted to be a D (and occasionally a later model) and can be legally re-converted back to being a C or CD. However, once up-converted, they will never qualify as an eligible LSA, ever, ever again. We can give useful advice on this and lots more.
I administer the Ercoupe online forums. Our ercoupe-tech forum has about 750 members and the ercoupe-flyin forum has close to 450 members. Please come join us and we'll be happy to help with all your questions - in detail.
