controlling authority is and what their rules are. Tidal waters are
generally either federal or state. Federal tidal waters are generally
open. State waters can go either way and you need to look up yours
state's aviation regulations. Non tidal waters may be federal, state,
or privately controlled. Federal agencies that control inland waters
such as the park service or BLM can go either way as can the state or
private entities such as municipalities, water and power companies, etc.
The water landing directory that Robert mentioned is an excellent guide
to all of this.
As a side note, most of the waters in Maryland are open. We'll have our
seaplane operations up and going in 2011 and welcome visiting pilots.
We are now the Mid-Atlantic SeaRey dealer and offer training, service,
kits sales, and fully built aircraft sales.

But beyond that about all I've heard is that you need permission from the lakeowner on private property, which sounds reasonable for little private lakes. Yes I know that Alaska is pretty much a mecca for float planes.(haven't studied details) But a CFI told me the other day that rivers were often a good spot.

The FAA doesn't concern itself with matters once you're out of the air. I guess you just have to be fast enough to outrun the game warden, huh? LOL!
