You should give Edsel Ford a call at 610 too. He'll have some good
input. 405-954-6400

Sorry about the triple post.

I'm pretty sure I only hit "Submit" one time - don't know what happened.

I own and fly a Sky Arrow 600 LSA.

The way the Maintenance Manual is written, it makes it problematical to do
even the most simple tasks. It requires a LSA Maintenance License or better
to do nearly anything, including many things that one could legally do as
Preventive Maintenance under Part 91.

My annual is due in December. This would be an opportunity to have that
inspection count as the inspection required by a DAR to convert from an SLSA
to an ELSA.

I am seriously considering it, so I can do more of my own maintenance. I do
not rent or instruct in the plane, nor do I intend to do so. I also am not
overly concerned with resale value, since I plan on keeping the plane a long
time.

In addition, the manufacturer (3i) is technically in some sort of Italian
bankruptcy. They are currently supporting the Sky Arrow, but going forward
its not at all certain they'll be able to continue doing so.

Has anyone done this - gone from SLSA to ELSA? Are there any other downsides
I haven't considered?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group What's the FAA going to do about thier "glitch"?

Theoretically, that is correct. But remember how radically differennt
the final sightseeing rules looked from that actual NPRM for those?
Given enough political pressure, the FAA can do what ever the heck they
feel like during rule making. We need to wait and see on this one.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group What's the FAA going to do about thier "glitch"?

A change as big and important as this REQUIRES inclusion in an NPRM. It is not in the one presently awaiting the final rule so it cannot be included in that final rule. Last word I got from 610 is it will have to wait for a future NPRM.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group What's the FAA going to do about thier "glitch"?

Helen and Bill,

Thank you for the quick response. :)

And I appreciate all the work done by the FAA and EAA in the Sport Pilot
section. I'm confident in their ability to listen and adjust after
careful thought.

Cheers,

Thomas

I have heard them same thing. Only makes sense because it was the whole reason that the sport pilot license was developed. To make it supposedly easier and cheaper to get into flyin and then work your way up to other licenses and ratings.

There are serious rumblings that this may be fixed when the new rules come out. The most recent expected release date for the new rules is the week of Dec 13th. Until then, we wait to see. Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Sport Pilot instructor license

Subpart H instructor has no minimum hours (aside from 15 hours in
category and class) so that is a moot question. Your sport instruction
time will give you a lot of invaluable experience.

There are two ways to get appointed to an examiner position. The
traditional way is through the FSDO but you will basically need to be
able to walk on water, and have been actively doing so for many decades,
before they will consider you. A few hundred hours doing any particular
type of instruction isn't going to make a difference in their selection
either way. They only appoint a dozen or so people and they are the
best of the best within their entire district.

The second way to become an examiner is through AFS 610 and they only
appoint examiners at the sport level so they are certainly looking at
your sport instruction time.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group What's the FAA going to do about thier "glitch"?

There are serious rumblings that this may be fixed when the new rules
come out. The most recent expected release date for the new rules is
the week of Dec 13th. Until then, we wait to see.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group What's the FAA going to do about thier "glitch"?

If the instructor is just a sport pilot CFI you time will not count towards a PPL. That is the way the rules are written at this time. The AOPA and EEA are working to get it changed but the current rules are still in place.

Bob, I am flying one out of KFPR (Fort Pierce, FL) with US Sport Aircraft (ussportaircraft. com). I absolutely love it. I got my PPL in '95 and just became current after about 10 years off because of marriage, kids, work, etc you know the same story you hear from alot of pilots.

I have had nothing but a great experience with the LSA. Can get a basically brand new aircraft for less than a 70's model 150/152.

Thanks for the photo, where are you landing in the photo.

Thanks Michael.
Does every experimental aircraft requesting a LODA get an inspection from the FSDO?

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Is Your ELSA Airworthiness About to Expire?

During your original ELSA airworthiness certification, if you chose to have the privilege of doing flight training for compensation or hire, your airworthiness certificate will show an expiration date of January 31, 2010.

WHETHER OR NOT YOU WANT TO DO ELSA FLIGHT TRAINING FOR HIRE AFTER THE DEADLINE, YOU MUST OBTAIN A NEW AIRWORTHINESS CERTIFICATE AND OPERATING LIMITATIONS. IF YOU WAIT UNTIL AFTER THE DEADLINE, YOUR AIRCRAFT WILL BE ILLEGAL TO FLY AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BE RE-CERTIFICATED!

If you do NOT want to continue flight training for hire, all you will need is a new airworthiness certificate and a new set of operating limitations that removes the flight-training-for-hire privilege. In that case, we can issue the new paperwork without a physical inspection of your aircraft.

If you want to continue flight training for hire after the deadline, in addition to a new airworthiness certificate and operating limitations, you are required to apply for a Letter Of Deviation Authority (LODA) with your local FSDO. Note that DARs are not allowed to issue LODAs, so it is probably best to work through the FSDO in those cases.

Re: Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re:Gobosh 700S

Hello
You dont need to "rent" the plane. You can supply gas at a price that gives you the rate. Like the companies who sell a $200 item on ebay for 99c and charge $200 in pick up fees

Hi Bob,
Can you tell us a little more about how your flying club is set up?  I have been contemplating the same sort of thing, but looking for ideas as to how to do it.  One of the issues I'm trying to get around is the ELSA being used as a trainer thing, and a club seems a way to do that as the student is then getting instruction in an aircraft he is part owner of instead of renting.

We have two of them at Charlotte County Airport, Punta Gorda, Florida.  And they seem to be very active trainers.  They have a number of qualified instructors - and a number of locations across Florida.

I prefer my 'poor man's' flying machine:  The Challenger II.  About 1/5th the cost and American made!

I'm forming a 'flying club' around my used Challenger.  And use that as the cornerstone of a Children's Aviation Center/ Alternative Energy Laboratory. Visit www.navalairestates .com for more information.

FAASTeam - FAASafety.gov

Arcadia, Fl. Aviation Day
Notice Number: NOTC2032

Arcadia to host Aviation Day Saturday, December 5th

Come to the Arcadia Airport and get the feel of an old time "fly in" with general aviation fixed wing aircraft as well as Trikes, Powered Para gliders, Gyro Copters and radio controlled models.

The event will kick off with a pancake breakfast starting at 8am.

Have you ever wanted to learn to fly? Well if so this event is for you. Register for our free "Learn to Fly seminar" by email at: (AviationDay@gmail.com.) Topics covered will be Pilot Certificate options; minimum requirements; aircraft options; choosing an instructor; preflight procedures and much more. This freeseminar will give you an understanding of what is required to get into the air as a pilot of your very own plane.

The new "Light Sport Aircraft" category will be well represented with new planes on site for you to check out. And if you decide to become a "Sport Pilot" you can start flying with far less expense than required of a Private Pilot. So if you thought you could never afford to fly come out to the Arcadia Aviation Day and talk to experts about the new "Sport Pilot Light Sport Aircraft" rule. It could change your life.

Tampa Bay Aero Sports will have a new Apollo "Fox" aircraft and new Apollo "Delta Jet" Trike.

Evolution Trikes will have the new "Revo" Trike

Float Planes & Amphibs will have the new "Capetown" & "Valor" aircraft and an "Airborne" Trike.

Suncoast Skydiving will be making a drop or two during the day.

Bring the entire family and enjoy a day on the field with the pilots and their planes. Have breakfast and lunch while learning about all the new options and ways to have fun in the air.

The kids will enjoy seeing Santa arrive in an open bi-plane. He will then head to downtown Arcadia for the afternoon festivities and Christmas Parade on Main Street later in the day.

The event will offer free attendance and free parking. Arcadia Airport is 8/10ths of a mile south of SR 70 on Airport Rd. in Arcadia, Florida. For more info email AviationDay@gmail.com

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re:Gobosh 700S

Jim,
Below is a message from Paul Hamilton regarding the LODA extension. Hope that helps.
Abid

Paul's letter:

"For anyone who has an E-LSA with registration expiring on 1-31-2010, or know anyone, read on. Check your registration.

Everyone who has an E-LSA where the registration expires 1-31-2010 must do something immediately!!!! The regulations do not allow issuance of a new airworthiness certificate for these aircraft, which means that they will no longer be able to fly legally unless their airworthiness certificates are amended before they expire.

If you fail to do it before 1-31-2010 it will become a lawn ornament (remember this problem before?). Most E-LSA training trikes registration expires 1-31-2010. EAA has developed procedures to accomplish this. See http://www.eaa.org/news/2009/2009-11-05_trainers.asp

Option a: Request to have your trike re-registered as a E-LSA with no training. This will be easier.

Option b: Request to have your trike re-registered as a E-LSA with a FAA "Letter of Deviation Authority" per 91.319(h) so you can use this for training after 1-31-2010. If you are going to do this, you must provide a training system and submit this to the FAA. Make this easy on yourself, use my industry accepted "Hamilton Pilot Training System" made specifically for trikes. See www.sport-pilot-training.com or www.ap-stores.com/c-160-trike-pilot-store.aspx for details. Reference it or buy a syllabus to submit to the FAA or develop your own system. But, get going on this now because it is worth the value of your trike.

I know this is another hurdle to jump through but so be it.

I am going to start this. Simply filling out the form, modifying the letter, and submitting it to your local FSDO."

Light-Sport Aircraft Yahoo group Re:Gobosh 700S

Jim,
Why don't you just try and get a LODA citing yourself as the only WSC instructor in your state/area. Ron Davis is doing that and seems to be having success with that reasoning in Indiana.

Hi Bob,
Can you tell us a little more about how your flying club is set up?

Visit www.navalairestates.com for more information.
